FC (Failure to Communicate)
DSC Security Alarm Panel
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
DSC FC (Failure to Communicate) means the panel made multiple attempts to send a signal to the monitoring centre and received no confirmation. On LCD keypads this appears as 'FAILURE TO COMMUNICATE' or 'FC'. The alarm still works locally (siren, detection) but your monitoring company will not receive alerts until the communication path is restored.
Affected Models
- DSC PC1616
- DSC PC1832
- DSC PC1864
- DSC PowerSeries Neo HS2016
- DSC PowerSeries Neo HS2032
Common Causes
- Phone line disconnected or damaged — the panel cannot reach the monitoring centre over PSTN
- Internet connection lost — panels with IP communicator modules cannot reach the receiver
- Cellular communicator module has lost signal or the SIM card account has lapsed
- Monitoring centre receiver is temporarily offline or undergoing maintenance
- Wrong central station telephone number or IP address programmed in the panel
How to Fix It
-
Check your phone line or internet connection
If your DSC panel uses a phone line, plug a regular phone into the line jack and listen for a dial tone. No tone means the phone line is down — contact your telephone provider. If using an IP communicator, confirm your router and internet connection are working.
-
Verify the communicator module is powered and connected
Open the panel enclosure and check the add-on communicator module (IP or cellular). Confirm its LED status lights are lit as expected. A solid or blinking fault LED on the communicator itself indicates the module needs attention — consult the module's manual for its specific LED codes.
-
Contact your monitoring company to confirm their end is operational
Ask your alarm monitoring company whether their receiver experienced any downtime. Occasionally the issue is on their end — a receiver reboot or maintenance window can cause temporary FC troubles. They can also attempt a test call to confirm if communication is restored.
-
Perform a manual communication test from the keypad
On DSC systems, enter installer programming mode (default code 5555) and navigate to the test transmission option to send a manual signal. Confirm with your monitoring company whether the test signal was received. This confirms or rules out a configuration issue.
-
Acknowledge and clear the FC trouble after restoring communication
Once the communication path is confirmed working, press * on the keypad and enter your access code to acknowledge the FC trouble. If it returns after clearing, call your alarm company or a DSC dealer to inspect the communicator module and programming.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DSC FC trouble mean my alarm is unmonitored?
Yes — during an active FC trouble, alarm signals (intrusion, fire, panic) cannot reach your monitoring centre. The local siren will still sound, but remote notification is not working. Treat FC as urgent and restore communication as quickly as possible.
Can I reset the FC trouble myself or do I need a technician?
You can acknowledge and clear the FC trouble message yourself by pressing * and entering your access code. However, the trouble will return immediately if the underlying communication path is still broken. A technician is needed if the issue is a failed communicator module, incorrect programming, or a wiring fault inside the panel.
