Low Battery / bAt
Honeywell Home Security Alarm Panel
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Honeywell Vista Low Battery (shown as 'bAt', 'LOW BATTERY', or 'SYSTEM LOW BATTERY' on the keypad) means the sealed lead-acid backup battery inside the panel enclosure has dropped below approximately 11.5V. The system continues to operate but will not sustain a long outage. Replace the battery — a standard Honeywell replacement is a 12V 4Ah or 12V 7Ah sealed lead-acid unit.
Affected Models
- Honeywell Vista 20P
- Honeywell Vista 15P
- Honeywell Vista 21iP
- Honeywell Vista 48LA
- Honeywell LYNX Plus
Common Causes
- The backup battery has reached end of life after 3–5 years of continuous float charging
- A recent power outage drained the battery significantly and it has not had time to recover
- The battery has a shorted or open cell — it will not recharge even with AC present
- High ambient temperature inside the panel enclosure has accelerated battery degradation
How to Fix It
-
Confirm AC power is present before concluding the battery is bad
If the 'NO AC' trouble is also active, the battery may simply be drained from running the system without AC recharging it. Restore AC power first and give the battery 12–24 hours to recharge before deciding it needs replacement.
-
Open the panel enclosure and locate the backup battery
The panel enclosure is typically a metal box mounted on a wall in a utility area. Open it with the key or panel release. The backup battery is the black sealed lead-acid unit connected by two wire leads (red = positive, black = negative) inside the enclosure.
-
Measure the battery voltage with a multimeter
Disconnect the red and black leads from the battery. Measure the voltage across the battery terminals. A healthy battery with AC present reads 13–13.5V (float charged). A reading below 11.5V that does not recover after several hours of AC charging indicates the battery is dead and must be replaced.
-
Replace the battery with the correct rated unit
Most Honeywell Vista panels use a 12V 4Ah or 12V 7Ah sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery. The 7Ah gives longer backup time and is recommended for Vista 20P/48LA. Connect red to positive, black to negative. Do not reverse polarity — it can damage the panel's charging circuit.
-
Clear the trouble on the keypad after installing the new battery
Press * and enter your master code to acknowledge the Low Battery trouble. The panel needs up to 30 minutes with AC present to confirm the new battery has charged sufficiently before clearing the trouble on its own. If it persists after an hour, verify the battery connections are secure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a Honeywell Vista backup battery last?
Sealed lead-acid backup batteries in alarm panels typically last 3–5 years with continuous float charging. Batteries in warm locations (near a furnace or in a hot attic) may degrade in 2–3 years. Replace proactively every 3–4 years rather than waiting for the low battery trouble.
Can I use any 12V sealed lead-acid battery as a replacement?
Any 12V sealed lead-acid (SLA or VRLA) battery with the correct Ah rating and physical dimensions will work. Do not use automotive batteries (they are not sealed and can outgas dangerous fumes). Common replacements include the Honeywell LYNXRCHKIT-SHA, Power-Sonic PS-1270, or any equivalent 12V 7Ah SLA unit.
