Base Station No Signal

SimpliSafe Security Alarm

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

SimpliSafe base station's cellular backup keeps the system online when home internet fails.
'No signal' means the cellular module can't reach the carrier.
Most often: base station is in a low-signal corner of the house, the cellular antenna is damaged, or the carrier deprecated 3G service (older base stations).
Move the base station to a higher floor or near a window, and check if you have an older Gen 1 or Gen 2 base that needs upgrade.

Affected Models

  • SimpliSafe Gen 3 Base Station
  • SimpliSafe Original Base Station

Common Causes

  • Base station in basement or interior closet (poor signal)
  • Cellular antenna damaged or detached
  • Old base station on 3G — carriers shut down 3G in 2022
  • Carrier signal genuinely weak in your neighborhood
  • WiFi-only mode active (cellular disabled in app)

How to Fix It

  1. Move to a window or higher floor.

    Cellular signal degrades through walls.
Best location: upstairs near a window facing toward town.
Avoid basements, interior closets, metal cabinets.
Try different locations — even a few feet make a big difference.

  2. Check signal in SimpliSafe app.

App → Base Station → Settings → Connectivity.
Shows cellular signal strength as bars.
    4-5 bars: excellent.
    1-2 bars: marginal.
    0 bars: no service.
    Move base and refresh.

  3. Verify base station generation.

Older Gen 1 and Gen 2 SimpliSafe used 3G cellular, which carriers shut down 2022-2023.
Affected systems lose cellular backup permanently.
SimpliSafe offered upgrade to Gen 3 at discount; check if you're on the old hardware.

  4. Try cellular reset.

App → Base Station → Settings → Reset Cellular Connection.
    Forces re-registration with carrier.
    Sometimes resolves stuck disconnect states.

  5. Confirm WiFi backup.

Even with cellular issues, WiFi keeps the base station online.
App should show 'Connected via WiFi'.
If both WiFi and cellular are down, system relies on local-only mode — siren still works but no monitoring.

  6. Call SimpliSafe support.

If signal in your neighborhood is genuinely weak (rural, behind hill), SimpliSafe support can suggest workarounds.
Sometimes they ship a replacement base with stronger antenna.
Phone: support number on the SimpliSafe website.
