Doorbell Disconnected

Vivint Security Alarm

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Vivint doorbell camera disconnected means the camera lost WiFi or power to the panel.
Most common: WiFi range too weak at the doorbell location, transformer voltage low, or doorbell needs reboot.
Check WiFi signal at the doorbell with your phone (stand next to the camera).
If signal is weak, add a WiFi extender near the front door — single biggest fix for doorbell drops.

Affected Models

  • Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro
  • Vivint Doorbell Camera V3
  • Vivint Doorbell Camera

Common Causes

  • WiFi signal weak at doorbell location
  • Doorbell transformer providing low voltage (under 16V)
  • Camera firmware needs update
  • Vivint hub WiFi network restart
  • Cold weather affecting battery-backup unit
  • Camera hardware failure (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Check WiFi at doorbell location.

Stand next to your front door with a phone.
Connect to the same WiFi network the doorbell uses (typically Vivint's internal network).
    Run a speed test.
Below 5 Mbps or 1-2 bars = camera will struggle to maintain connection.

  2. Add a WiFi extender.

Place a mesh node or WiFi extender near the front door (inside, in a wall outlet).
    This dramatically improves doorbell connectivity.
Vivint doesn't provide extenders — use TP-Link Deco, Eero, or Google Nest WiFi nodes.

  3. Check transformer voltage.

Vivint doorbells need 16-24V AC transformer.
If transformer is older (under 16V), doorbell may starve in cold weather or under heavy use.
Upgrade to 24V transformer (typically 30-60 USD; certified electrician install).

  4. Reboot the doorbell.

On Vivint app: Cameras → your Doorbell → Settings → Reboot.
Or via panel: Cameras → Doorbell → Reboot.
    Camera restarts in 1-2 minutes.
Most connectivity issues clear after reboot.

  5. Confirm hub network is online.

If your panel is offline, the doorbell can't connect either.
Fix panel connectivity first (see panel-offline article).
Doorbell follows the panel's network status.

  6. Update firmware.

Vivint app or panel will prompt for firmware updates when available.
    Apply.
Some doorbell connectivity bugs were fixed in firmware over the past year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I expect doorbell drops in winter?

Cold weather (below 20°F) can affect battery-backed components and reduce signal range.
Some seasonal disconnects are normal in extreme cold.
If they're frequent year-round, it's a real issue — not weather.
