Black Screen

Reolink Security Camera

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Reolink black screen means the app is connected to the camera but no video is coming through.
Causes: camera in low-power sleep (battery models), IR illuminator stuck on/off, lens covered (debris, spider web), or sensor module failed.
Check lens for obstructions, restart the camera via app, and confirm lens isn't blocked by a spider web (incredibly common with outdoor cameras).

Affected Models

  • Reolink Argus 3 Pro
  • Reolink RLC-810A
  • Reolink E1 Pro
  • Reolink Duo 2
  • Reolink TrackMix

Common Causes

  • Lens covered by spider web, leaves, or dust
  • Battery camera in deep sleep (motion not triggering)
  • IR illuminator failure (LED dead) — only black at night
  • Camera firmware glitch causing stream hang
  • WiFi signal too weak to transmit video
  • Sensor module hardware failure

How to Fix It

  1. Check lens for obstructions.

    Walk to the camera physically.
    Look at the lens.
Spider webs, leaves, dust, or condensation on the cover — clean with microfiber cloth.
Don't use solvents that may damage the cover.

  2. If only at night — check IR LEDs.

Reolink cameras have infrared LEDs around the lens.
Cover ambient light, point a phone camera at the camera (phone cameras can see IR even though humans can't).
You should see a faint glow from working IR LEDs.
No glow = LED bank dead = night vision broken.

  3. Restart the camera.

Reolink app → camera → Settings → Restart.
    Camera reboots in 1-2 minutes.
Most stream-hang issues clear after restart.

  4. Battery models — wake up by motion.

Argus, Lumus, and other battery cameras sleep deeply to save power.
Walk in front of the camera to trigger motion wake.
If it doesn't wake to motion, the PIR sensor or battery is the issue.

  5. Check battery level (battery models).

    App shows battery percentage.
Below 10%, camera operation gets unreliable.
Charge or replace battery (Argus replacement battery is 30-50 USD).

  6. Update firmware.

Reolink Client (PC) or app: Device Settings → Firmware Update.
Several stream-related bugs have been fixed in updates.
    Apply latest stable version.

  7. Factory reset if persistent.

Hold the reset button on the camera (varies — check manual) for 10-15 seconds.
    Camera returns to defaults.
Re-add to app via Add Device flow.
If image is still black after reset, hardware failure — RMA via Reolink (warranty 2 years).

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my camera show black only at certain times?

If only at night: IR illuminator failed.
If only during day: IR cut filter stuck (common in older cameras), can't switch back to color mode.
If random: firmware bug or weak WiFi causing stream hang.
Each pattern points to different fix.
