E2
Singer Sewing Machine
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Singer E2 indicates a foot controller fault.
The machine started up and either did not see the controller plugged in, or saw the controller already pressed (which is unsafe at start-up), or saw a wiring fault in the cable.
Most cases are a loose plug or a foot resting on the pedal during power-on.
Affected Models
- Singer Heavy Duty 4423
- Singer Heavy Duty 4452
- Singer Quantum Stylist 9960
- Singer Stylist 7258
- Singer Confidence series
Common Causes
- Foot controller plug not fully seated
- Foot pedal pressed at the moment power was turned on
- Cable damaged where it enters the pedal
- Aftermarket pedal incompatible with the model
- Internal connector inside the machine loose
- Pedal control circuit aged out
How to Fix It
-
Power off.
Turn the machine off.
Remove your foot from the pedal entirely.
This rules out the most common E2 cause — a foot resting on the pedal during start-up. -
Reseat the pedal plug.
Unplug the pedal at the side of the machine, blow any dust out of the socket, and plug it back in firmly.
You should feel a positive seat — not a wobble.
A worn socket sometimes needs the plug rotated slightly to make solid contact. -
Inspect the cable.
Run your hand along the entire cable from machine to pedal.
Cracks at the strain reliefs (where the cable enters either end) are common after years of being rolled around chair legs.
A damaged cable needs replacement — the cable assembly is 15-30 USD. -
Power on without touching the pedal.
With the pedal completely free of any pressure, switch the machine on.
If E2 does not appear, the issue was a foot accidentally on the pedal at start-up.
If E2 still shows, the cable or pedal itself is faulty. -
Try a known-good pedal.
If a friend has the same Singer model, swap pedals as a test.
Their pedal works = your pedal is bad.
Their pedal also fails = the issue is inside your machine. -
Replace the pedal.
Genuine Singer foot controllers are 25-50 USD.
Match the model — Singer uses several different pedal styles and they are not interchangeable.
Aftermarket pedals can work but verify compatibility before buying. -
Service for internal faults.
If a known-good pedal still triggers E2, the connector inside the machine or the pedal-input circuit on the main board has failed.
Service shops charge 60-120 USD to diagnose and repair.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I sew without the pedal?
Some Singer models have a Start/Stop button on the front and let you sew at a fixed speed without a pedal.
If yours has it, you can keep working until the pedal is repaired.
Older mechanical Singers have no such button — pedal repair is required.
