Slow Red Blink

Arlo Smart Doorbell

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Arlo doorbell shows a slow red blinking LED — typically once every few seconds — when the battery is low and needs charging.
The doorbell continues to function for a short period, but motion detection and live view become unreliable as the battery drops further.
Remove the doorbell from its mount, plug into the supplied charging cable, and charge fully before remounting.

Affected Models

  • Arlo Video Doorbell (wireless)
  • Arlo Pro 5 Wireless Doorbell
  • Arlo Essential Wireless Doorbell
  • Arlo Audio Doorbell

Common Causes

  • Battery depleted from normal use
  • Cold weather drained battery faster than expected
  • Many motion events drained battery quickly
  • Doorbell missed scheduled charging
  • Battery aging after 2-3 years of use
  • Hardwired doorbell lost connection to transformer

How to Fix It

  1. Remove the doorbell from its mount.

Use the small release pin or screwdriver provided with the doorbell to release it from the wall mount.
Most Arlo doorbells slide off after pressing a release button or pin.
    Bring inside to charge.

  2. Connect the supplied USB cable.

Plug the magnetic or USB-C cable into the doorbell.
Use a 5V/1A wall adapter or higher.
The LED transitions from red to amber/orange while charging.

  3. Charge for 2-3 hours.

Arlo doorbells typically charge fully in 2-3 hours from empty.
The LED turns solid green or off when fully charged.
Do not remount partially charged — short cycles reduce battery life.

  4. Check battery in the Arlo app.

Open Arlo app → device settings → battery level.
    Confirm 100% before remounting.
If the app shows lower than expected after charging, the battery may be aging.

  5. Check charging temperature.

Arlo doorbells charge slowly or refuse to charge below 32°F or above 104°F.
Charge indoors at room temperature — not in a hot car or freezing garage.

  6. Inspect the charging port.

Look for debris, lint, or corrosion in the charging port.
Wipe with a dry microfibre cloth.
Use a wooden toothpick to clear stuck debris — never metal.

  7. Plan more frequent charging.

If you find yourself charging often, schedule a calendar reminder every 4-6 weeks.
Cold climates and high-traffic doorways drain faster than spec.
Some users keep a spare charged doorbell to swap in.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an Arlo doorbell battery last per charge?

Cold weather, many motion events, and frequent live-view sessions all reduce runtime.
