Live View Loading

Ring Smart Doorbell

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Ring live view stuck loading means the app can't establish a real-time stream with the doorbell.
Most often: WiFi signal at the doorbell is weak, the doorbell needs a reboot, the app needs an update, or your phone's connection to Ring's servers is degraded.
Stand near the doorbell and check WiFi signal on your phone — below 2 bars and the doorbell will struggle to maintain live streams.

Affected Models

  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Video Doorbell 4
  • Ring Battery Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Doorbell 2

Common Causes

  • WiFi signal at doorbell location too weak (under 2 bars)
  • Doorbell needs reboot (app crash or firmware glitch)
  • Battery low on battery models (live view requires more power)
  • Ring app cache corrupted
  • Ring server-side issue (rare but happens)
  • Phone on cellular with poor signal

How to Fix It

  1. Check WiFi signal at doorbell.

Stand at your front door with your phone.
    Connect to home WiFi.
Run a speed test or check signal bars.
Below 2 bars = doorbell can't sustain live view.
    Move on to extender step.

  2. Add a WiFi extender.

Best fix for Ring connectivity issues: place a WiFi mesh node or extender in the entryway, near (but inside) the front door.
TP-Link Deco, Eero, Google Nest WiFi all work.
Cheap mesh nodes start at 80 USD.

  3. Reboot the doorbell.

Ring app → your doorbell → Device Health → Reboot This Device.
Or pull the battery (battery models) for 30 seconds.
For wired: turn off the breaker for 30 seconds.
Doorbell rejoins network in 1-2 minutes.

  4. Check battery level.

Battery doorbells: Ring app → device → Battery.
Below 30%, live view becomes unreliable since live streaming uses significant power.
Charge fully or hardwire to existing doorbell transformer.

  5. Update Ring app.

App store → Ring → Update.
Older app versions had several streaming bugs that updates fixed.
Force-quit app after update before testing.

  6. Try cellular instead of WiFi.

If you're on home WiFi while testing, your phone might be having issues.
Disable WiFi on phone, use cellular data, retry live view.
If it works on cellular, your home WiFi has issues.

  7. Reset and re-setup.

If nothing else works: hold setup button on doorbell for 15+ seconds.
    This factory resets.
Re-add via Ring app → Set Up Device → walk through pairing.
Last resort but often clears stubborn issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Ring's WiFi so picky?

Ring doorbells stream HD video which needs steady upload bandwidth (1-2 Mbps continuous).
Most home WiFi is optimized for download — upload is often weaker, especially at the property edges where doorbells live.
Mesh extenders solve this for most users.
