Package Detection Not Working

Ring Smart Doorbell

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Ring package detection requires a Ring Protect Plus or Pro subscription — it's not free.
If you have the subscription, enable package alerts in app: Devices → Doorbell → Smart Alerts → Package Detection.
Set up zones around the porch where packages would be left.
Detection is AI-based and works best in good lighting.

Affected Models

  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2
  • Ring Video Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Battery Doorbell Pro
  • Ring Video Doorbell 4

Common Causes

  • No Ring Protect Plus/Pro subscription (Smart Alerts are paid features)
  • Package Alert disabled in app settings
  • Detection zone not set or set too small
  • Camera angle doesn't see drop zone clearly
  • Poor lighting at delivery time
  • Package detection AI doesn't recognize this delivery (false negative)

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm subscription level.

Ring app → Account → Plans.
Package Detection requires Ring Protect Plus (10 USD/month per location) or Pro.
Basic and Standard plans don't include it.
    Upgrade if needed.

  2. Enable Package Alerts.

App → Devices → your doorbell → Smart Alerts → Package Alerts → toggle ON.
Confirm the doorbell is signed in to a Smart Alerts-eligible account.

  3. Set Smart Alert zones.

App → Devices → doorbell → Smart Alerts → set zones around the porch where packages typically land.
Larger zone catches more packages but more false positives.
Adjust to fit your porch geometry.

  4. Check camera angle.

Walk to the doorbell and check the live view.
The drop zone (porch floor) should be visible in the frame.
If the doorbell only sees walking-up faces, package detection won't trigger.
    Adjust mounting angle if possible.

  5. Improve lighting.

Package detection AI relies on visual clues.
Dark porch at night = misses many packages.
Add a porch light triggered by motion, or upgrade to a Ring with Night Vision (Pro 2 has color night vision).

  6. Update firmware.

App → Device Health → Update Firmware.
Ring's package detection AI improvements ship in firmware.
    Apply latest stable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why doesn't Ring detect every package?

Package detection AI is good but not perfect.
Small envelopes, packages dropped behind plants, or unusual delivery angles can fool it.
Expect 80-90% reliability.
For mission-critical deliveries, also enable regular motion alerts.
