Device Offline

TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug / Smart Switch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

A Kasa device showing offline has lost its WiFi connection. The plug or switch itself likely still works manually — the light it controls will still function via the physical button. The most common causes are a router restart that assigned a new IP, weak WiFi signal in the device location, or a brief cloud connectivity issue.

Affected Models

  • Kasa EP25 Smart Plug
  • Kasa EP40 Outdoor Plug
  • Kasa KP115 Smart Plug
  • Kasa KP125 Smart Plug
  • Kasa HS200 Smart Switch
  • Kasa HS220 Smart Dimmer

Common Causes

  • Router restarted and device lost connection
  • WiFi password changed — device still has the old password
  • Weak WiFi signal in the device's location
  • Kasa cloud service temporary outage
  • Device unplugged or power cut

How to Fix It

  1. Check whether the device is actually powered.

Confirm the Kasa plug is plugged in and the socket is live. For smart switches, confirm the circuit breaker for that switch has not tripped. A device that has no power will always show as offline.

  2. Power cycle the Kasa device.

Unplug the Kasa smart plug, wait 10 seconds, and plug it back in. For smart switches: turn off the circuit breaker for 10 seconds and restore. After power restoration, the device needs approximately 30-60 seconds to reconnect to WiFi and the Kasa cloud.

  3. Check the WiFi signal at the device location.

On your phone, stand next to the Kasa device and check WiFi signal strength. If the signal is weak (1 bar) or the phone frequently disconnects, the Kasa device will have an unreliable connection. Move the router closer, or add a WiFi extender near the device.

  4. Re-setup the device if the WiFi password changed.

If your router WiFi password was recently changed, the Kasa device still has the old credentials and cannot reconnect. In the Kasa app, tap the device name > Edit (pencil icon) > Change Network. Follow the wizard to input the new WiFi credentials.

  5. Check the Kasa service status.

Kasa cloud outages cause all devices to show as offline simultaneously. If multiple Kasa devices went offline at the same time, visit the TP-Link status page or check community forums. Local control (physical button) continues to work during cloud outages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still use my Kasa smart plug when it is offline?

Yes — the physical button on the Kasa plug works regardless of WiFi or cloud connectivity. You can manually turn the plug on and off by pressing the button. App control, voice commands, and schedules require the cloud connection to be active.

My Kasa devices go offline every night at the same time — why?

Nightly offline events at a consistent time usually mean the router is performing a scheduled firmware update or restarting at that time. Check your router settings for a scheduled restart time. Kasa devices reconnect within 60-90 seconds after the router comes back online — if they consistently reconnect by themselves, no action is needed.
