Not Connecting to App

TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug / Smart Switch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

TP-Link Kasa setup failures are almost always caused by the device connecting to 5GHz WiFi instead of 2.4GHz (Kasa requires 2.4GHz), or the phone's Location permission not being granted to the Kasa app. Confirm 2.4GHz is enabled on your router and grant Location permission to the Kasa app.

Affected Models

  • Kasa EP25 Smart Plug
  • Kasa EP40 Outdoor Plug
  • Kasa KP125 Matter Smart Plug
  • Kasa KP115 Smart Plug
  • Kasa HS200 Smart Switch
  • Kasa KS240 Smart Dimmer

Common Causes

  • Router broadcasting 5GHz only — Kasa devices require 2.4GHz
  • Location permission not granted to the Kasa app — required for WiFi scanning
  • Phone connected to a different WiFi network than the one the Kasa will join
  • Kasa device not in setup mode — LED should be flashing
  • Kasa app outdated

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm 2.4GHz WiFi is available and enabled.

Kasa smart plugs and switches connect only to 2.4GHz WiFi. In your router settings, ensure 2.4GHz is enabled. If your router uses band steering (combined 2.4 and 5GHz under one SSID), the Kasa setup may fail if the phone and device cannot negotiate 2.4GHz. Creating a dedicated 2.4GHz SSID for smart home devices is the most reliable solution.

  2. Grant Location permission to the Kasa app.

On Android: Settings > Apps > Kasa > Permissions > Location — set to Allow While Using App. On iOS: Settings > Kasa > Location — set to While Using App. The Kasa app uses Location permission to scan for nearby WiFi networks during setup. Without this permission the app cannot discover the device's temporary WiFi hotspot.

  3. Put the Kasa device into setup mode.

The device LED must be flashing (amber/orange flashing indicates setup mode). If the LED is solid or not flashing, reset the device by pressing and holding the reset button for 5 seconds until the LED flashes. With the LED flashing, proceed with setup in the Kasa app.

  4. Connect your phone to the 2.4GHz network before running setup.

On your phone's WiFi settings, manually connect to your 2.4GHz network before starting the Kasa setup wizard. This ensures the device and your phone are on the same band. Open the Kasa app and tap Add Device after confirming the phone WiFi connection.

  5. Update the Kasa app.

An outdated Kasa app sometimes fails the device provisioning process. Update to the latest version from the App Store or Google Play, then restart the setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does TP-Link Kasa work with 5GHz WiFi?

Standard Kasa devices do not support 5GHz WiFi. However, Kasa Matter-compatible devices (such as the KP125M) can work on 5GHz networks through a Matter hub (like a Google Nest Hub or Apple HomePod) that acts as a bridge. For direct WiFi setup, 2.4GHz is required.

I set up my Kasa device successfully but it is not in the app — where is it?

After setup, the device should appear in the Devices tab of the Kasa app. If it does not appear, log out of the app, wait 30 seconds, and log back in — the device list sometimes needs a refresh after initial setup. Also confirm you are logged into the same Kasa account used during setup.
