Comm Fail

Visonic Home Alarm System

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Comm Fail (communicator failure) warning means your Visonic alarm panel has lost contact with the monitoring centre. If a break-in occurs, the alarm will still sound at your property but an alert may not reach the monitoring station.

Affected Models

  • Visonic PowerMax Pro
  • Visonic PowerMax Complete
  • Visonic PowerMax Express
  • Visonic PowerG Hub

Common Causes

  • Landline phone line is disconnected or has a fault (PSTN communicator models)
  • Broadband internet connection is down (IP communicator models)
  • SIM card credit has run out or SIM has been deactivated (GSM models)
  • IP communicator module has lost its network configuration
  • Monitoring centre receiver is temporarily offline

How to Fix It

  1. Check your broadband/internet connection

If your alarm uses IP communication, check that your router is working. Try a website or streaming service on another device. If the internet is down, restoring it will likely clear the Comm Fail.

  2. Check the phone line (PSTN models)

Plug a standard phone into the socket the alarm uses. If there is no dial tone, the line fault is external — contact your phone provider.

  3. Check the GSM signal (mobile communicator models)

If your alarm has a GSM module, check there is adequate mobile signal at the panel location. Contact your alarm company if the SIM may have expired.

  4. Restart your router

Unplug the router for 30 seconds and reconnect it. Once the internet is re-established, the panel should automatically re-connect to the monitoring centre within a few minutes.

  5. Call your monitoring centre

If the Comm Fail persists after internet/phone is restored, call your monitoring centre directly. They will confirm whether they can see your panel and advise on next steps.

When to Call a Professional

Yes — if basic connectivity checks do not resolve it within an hour, call your alarm company or monitoring centre.

Visonic Communicator Failure

Comm Fail means the alarm panel can no longer send signals to your monitoring centre. This is one of the more serious trouble codes because it affects the remote response capability of your alarm.

Your Alarm Still Works Locally

The siren, strobe, and all detection zones continue to operate normally. If someone breaks into your property, the alarm will still sound loudly. What is missing is the automatic call/data signal to the monitoring station that would dispatch a response.

Communication Methods Visonic Uses

Method Check
IP (broadband) Router online? Panel on same network?
PSTN (phone line) Dial tone on the socket?
GSM (mobile SIM) Signal strength? SIM active?

Most modern Visonic installations use IP or dual-path (IP + GSM) communication. Restoring the internet connection is the most common fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Comm Fail mean my alarm is not protecting my home?

Your alarm still detects intrusions and sounds the local siren. The only thing that does not work is the remote notification to the monitoring centre. Your property still has audible protection — you have just lost the remote response element.

My internet is fine but Comm Fail is still showing. What next?

The IP module inside the panel may need to be re-registered with the monitoring centre's receiver, or the communicator module itself may have failed. This requires your alarm installer to visit and re-configure it.
