Battery Trouble

Visonic Home Alarm System

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

A Battery Trouble warning means the backup battery inside your Visonic alarm panel is low, not charging, or has failed. If mains power fails, your alarm may not function reliably until the battery is replaced.

Affected Models

  • Visonic PowerMax Pro
  • Visonic PowerMax Complete
  • Visonic PowerMax Express
  • Visonic PowerG Hub

Common Causes

  • Backup battery has aged and can no longer hold a charge (batteries last 3–5 years)
  • Battery was deeply discharged during a prolonged power cut and has not recovered
  • Battery connection inside the panel is loose or corroded
  • Charging circuit on the panel board has failed

How to Fix It

  1. Note how old the battery is

If your alarm has not had a battery replacement in the last 3–4 years, the battery has almost certainly aged beyond reliable use. A replacement is due.

  2. Acknowledge the warning

Enter your user PIN and press Disarm/Off to silence the battery trouble beeping. This does not fix the battery — it just stops the audible alert temporarily.

  3. Contact your alarm monitoring company or installer

If your alarm is monitored, your monitoring centre may already have been notified. Call your installer to schedule a battery replacement visit.

  4. Do not ignore it

A dead backup battery means your alarm has no protection during a power cut. Burglars sometimes cut power to a home before entering — a dead battery makes this tactic more effective.

When to Call a Professional

Yes — battery replacement inside an alarm panel should be done by a security technician.

Visonic Backup Battery Warning

Every Visonic alarm panel contains a sealed rechargeable backup battery. This battery keeps the alarm running if the mains power is cut. A Battery Trouble warning means this battery is no longer reliable.

How Serious Is This?

Your alarm still works normally when mains power is present. But during any power cut, the backup battery provides little to no protection. Given that power cuts and deliberate power interference are exactly the scenarios a backup battery is designed for, this warning should not be ignored.

Typical Battery Lifespan

Battery Age Expected Condition
Under 2 years Healthy — likely a charging fault
2–4 years May be ageing — replacement advisable
Over 4 years Almost certainly time for replacement

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of battery does a Visonic panel use?

Most Visonic PowerMax panels use a 12V sealed lead-acid (SLA) rechargeable battery, typically 7 Ah. The exact size is noted on the battery inside the panel. A technician can source and fit the correct replacement.

Can I replace the battery myself?

Physically it is a simple swap — disconnect two wires, slide out the old battery, slide in the new one. However, opening the alarm panel may void your monitoring contract or tamper-seal. Check with your alarm company first.
