Door Sense Not Calibrated

August Smart Lock

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Door Sense Not Calibrated' means the August DoorSense sensor needs to learn the door's open and closed positions.
This typically appears after install or after the DoorSense sensor moves.
Open the August app, find your lock, and run DoorSense Calibration — the app guides you through opening/closing the door several times.
Calibration takes 2 minutes.

Affected Models

  • August Smart Lock Pro
  • August Wi-Fi Smart Lock 4th gen
  • August Smart Lock 3rd gen

Common Causes

  • First-time install — DoorSense never calibrated
  • DoorSense sensor moved (mount loose or replaced)
  • Lock was factory reset
  • Door warping changed sensor relationship
  • App update reset DoorSense settings

How to Fix It

  1. Open the August app.

Make sure your phone is connected to your August Smart Lock.
Tap the lock to open its details.
    Navigate to settings → DoorSense.

  2. Run DoorSense Calibration.

Tap 'Calibrate DoorSense' (or similar option).
The app prompts you through the procedure.
You'll need to physically open and close the door several times so the sensor learns its positions.
Have the door accessible during calibration.

  3. Open and close as prompted.

    Follow the app's on-screen prompts.
Typically: close the door fully → tap Done.
Open the door fully → tap Done.
    Close again → tap Done.
The app reads sensor values at each position.

  4. Verify calibration.

After calibration, look at the door state in the app.
Closed door should show 'Door Closed'.
Open door should show 'Door Open'.
If states are reversed or inconsistent, recalibrate or check the DoorSense magnet placement on the door frame.

  5. Check magnet alignment.

August DoorSense uses a small magnet stuck to the door frame.
Should be opposite the lock's sensor when door is closed.
If it's slipped or fallen off, reattach with fresh adhesive (3M VHB tape works well).
Position so it aligns with the lock when door is fully closed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DoorSense required for August to work?

No — DoorSense is an enhancement, not a requirement.
The lock works fine without DoorSense calibrated.
What you lose: auto-lock on close, accurate door state in the app, and door-left-open alerts.
Many users find these features valuable enough to calibrate; others ignore the warning.

Why does DoorSense lose calibration?

Most often: the magnet falls off the door frame.
The supplied 3M tape works but degrades over years of weather exposure.
Other causes: lock body shifts due to loose mounting, door warps from humidity, app updates reset settings.
Quick recalibration restores function in any case.
