Wi-Fi Bridge Disconnected

August Smart Lock

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Wi-Fi Bridge Disconnected' means the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge has lost connection to your home network.
The lock still works for in-person and Bluetooth access from nearby phones, but remote access (away from home) requires the bridge.
Power-cycle the bridge: unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in.
If it doesn't reconnect, check Wi-Fi password or move the bridge closer to your router.

Affected Models

  • August Wi-Fi Smart Lock 4th gen
  • August Smart Lock 3rd gen with Connect Bridge

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi password changed without updating the bridge
  • Router moved or replaced
  • Bridge unplugged or power outage
  • Bridge too far from router (weak signal)
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi disabled (bridge requires 2.4 GHz)

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the bridge.

Unplug the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge from the wall outlet.
    Wait 30 seconds.
    Plug back in.
The bridge boots up and tries to reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
    This fixes most temporary disconnections.

  2. Verify Wi-Fi network.

Has your Wi-Fi password changed recently?
    Has your router been replaced?
If yes, the bridge has the old credentials and can't connect.
Use the August app to reconfigure: Settings → Wi-Fi Bridge → Reconnect to Wi-Fi.
    Enter the new password.

  3. Check signal strength.

The bridge should be within 30 feet of your router (line of sight) for reliable connection.
If it's far away or blocked by walls, signal is too weak for reliable operation.
Move the bridge closer to the router, or move the router.
Many users plug the bridge into an outlet near their router.

  4. Confirm 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is enabled.

August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge only supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (not 5 GHz).
If your router has separate 2.4 and 5 GHz networks, make sure 2.4 GHz is enabled.
If your router uses combined SSID (auto-band), 2.4 GHz should be available — the bridge connects to whichever band is best.

  5. Re-pair if needed.

If the bridge won't reconnect after troubleshooting, factory reset and re-pair.
Procedure: hold the small reset button on the bridge for 10 seconds.
    The bridge enters pairing mode.
Use the August app to re-add it: Add Device → Wi-Fi Bridge.
    Follow the setup wizard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use August without the bridge?

Yes — for in-home use.
Bluetooth from nearby phones works without the bridge.
What you lose: remote unlock from away, Alexa/Google Assistant integration, and notifications when away.
For users who only need lock access while at home, the bridge is optional.

Why does the bridge keep disconnecting?

Recurring disconnections usually point to weak Wi-Fi signal or router issues.
Try: relocating the bridge closer to router, using a Wi-Fi extender, or upgrading your router.
If your router itself is unstable (cheap or old), the bridge will be unstable too — fixing the underlying Wi-Fi solves multiple smart-home issues at once.
