Door Sense Calibration Required
Kwikset Smart Lock
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Door Sense Calibration Required' means the Kwikset Halo's door state sensor needs to learn what 'door open' and 'door closed' look like.
This typically happens at first install or after a hardware reset.
Open the Kwikset app, find the lock, and run Door Sense Calibration.
The procedure asks you to open and close the door several times so the lock learns the magnet/sensor positions.
Affected Models
- Kwikset Halo
- Kwikset Halo Touch
- Kwikset SmartCode 916
- Kwikset 953
Common Causes
- First-time install never had door sense calibrated
- Lock was reset to factory defaults
- Magnet displacement changed sensor readings
- Door warping changed alignment
- Recent firmware update reset calibration
How to Fix It
-
Open the Kwikset app.
Make sure you have the latest version of the Kwikset app on your phone.
Connect to your lock — should show as online.
Navigate to the lock's settings. -
Find Door Sense settings.
In the lock settings, look for 'Door Sense' or 'DoorSense'.
Tap to open the door sense configuration.
You'll see a 'Calibrate' button.
Have your door accessible — you'll need to physically open and close it during calibration. -
Run calibration.
Follow the on-screen prompts.
Typically: close the door fully → tap Next.
Open the door fully → tap Next.
Close again → tap Done.
The app reads sensor values at each position to learn what 'open' vs 'closed' looks like. -
Verify calibration.
After calibration, the lock state shown in the app should match reality:
Door closed → lock shows 'Door Closed'.
Door open → lock shows 'Door Ajar'.
If states are reversed or inconsistent, recalibrate. -
Disable Door Sense if not needed.
If you don't want auto-lock on close or don't trust door sense reliability, disable it.
Settings → Door Sense → Off.
The lock still works fine without it — you just lose the auto-lock-on-close feature.
Some users find this is more reliable than slightly-flaky door sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is door sense for?
Door sense detects when the door is open vs closed.
This enables: auto-lock as soon as the door closes, alerts when door is left open, and accurate status in the app.
Without door sense, auto-lock runs on a timer (less smart) and the app can't tell you if you left the door open.
Will my lock work without door sense?
Yes — all the locking and access features work without door sense.
You'll just lose smart features that depend on knowing the door state.
Many older locks (without door sense) work fine — it's a quality-of-life feature, not essential.
