Keypad Lockout
Kwikset Smart Lock
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Kwikset keypad lockout activates after 5 consecutive incorrect code entries. The lock beeps, flashes red, and disables the keypad for 30–60 seconds. After the timeout the keypad reactivates. If you have a Kwikset Halo with Wi-Fi or the app, you can unlock remotely during the lockout. A physical key always bypasses the lockout.
Affected Models
- Kwikset Halo
- Kwikset Halo Touch
- Kwikset SmartCode 888
- Kwikset SmartCode 914
- Kwikset Convert Smart Lock
Common Causes
- Five incorrect access codes entered in a row — most commonly by a family member who forgot the code or entered it in the wrong order
- Someone pressing keys randomly or testing codes (attempted break-in)
- Sticky or dirty keypad buttons that register unintended key presses
- Child pressing keys on the lock keypad repeatedly
How to Fix It
-
Wait for the lockout timer to expire
Kwikset's default keypad lockout lasts 30 seconds after 5 wrong attempts on most models. Some models extend to 60 seconds for repeated lockout events. The keypad LED will pulse red during the lockout. Do not press any more keys — additional entries during the lockout may extend it.
-
Use your physical key to enter immediately
All Kwikset smart locks include a traditional keyed cylinder. Your key will always work regardless of the electronic lockout state. If you need immediate access, use the key while the keypad lockout counts down.
-
Unlock remotely via the Kwikset app if you have Wi-Fi access
Kwikset Halo and Halo Touch have built-in Wi-Fi. If you have the Kwikset app set up on your phone, you can send an unlock command through the app during the lockout without needing to wait. This is also useful if a family member is locked out and calls you.
-
After the lockout clears, re-enter the correct code carefully
When the lockout expires, the keypad will reactivate. Enter your access code slowly and carefully, pressing each key firmly. If you are unsure of the code, unlock with your key and then check the programmed codes in the Kwikset app or reprogram them.
-
Review and update access codes if the lockout is recurring
Frequent lockouts usually mean someone in the household has forgotten their code or is using the wrong one. Open the Kwikset app or use the programming instructions to review all active codes and share the correct one with all regular users. Consider simpler 4-digit codes that are easier to remember.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many wrong attempts trigger a Kwikset lockout?
Kwikset smart locks lock out the keypad after 5 consecutive incorrect code entries. The counter resets after a successful correct code entry. The lockout is 30 seconds on most SmartCode models and 60 seconds on Halo models for the first event, with some models extending the lockout duration for repeated lockout events within a short period.
Can I disable the Kwikset keypad lockout feature?
No. The lockout feature is a fixed security protection on Kwikset smart locks and cannot be disabled. This is intentional — disabling it would allow unlimited code guessing. If the lockout is causing inconvenience due to a family member repeatedly entering the wrong code, the solution is to ensure everyone knows the correct code.
