Lock Jammed

Kwikset Smart Lock

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A jammed Kwikset lock means the motor tried to move the deadbolt but met resistance it could not overcome. The lock will beep, flash red, and report the jam in the app. In most cases the door or deadbolt bolt is physically misaligned with the strike plate. Fixing the alignment resolves the jam permanently.

Affected Models

  • Kwikset Halo
  • Kwikset Halo Touch
  • Kwikset SmartCode 888
  • Kwikset SmartCode 914
  • Kwikset Convert Smart Lock

Common Causes

  • Door has shifted seasonally (swelling in humidity or shrinking in cold) so the deadbolt no longer aligns with the strike plate hole
  • Strike plate has shifted or the mounting screws have loosened
  • Deadbolt bolt is extended when the door is closed, contacting the strike plate face instead of entering the hole
  • Lock was installed without completing the door handing setup, so the motor direction is reversed
  • Foreign object or paint is obstructing the bolt path

How to Fix It

  1. Manually test the deadbolt with the door open

Open the door and manually operate the deadbolt (using the thumb turn or a key) with the door held open. If the bolt extends and retracts smoothly with the door open but jams with the door closed, the problem is door-frame alignment, not the lock mechanism itself.

  2. Check the bolt-to-strike-plate alignment with the door closed

Close the door slowly and watch whether the deadbolt bolt lines up with the centre of the strike plate opening. Apply lipstick or chalk to the end of the bolt, close the door, and operate the lock once. The mark left on the strike plate shows exactly where the bolt is hitting.

  3. Adjust the strike plate position

Loosen the strike plate screws and shift the plate to centre it on where the bolt is actually landing. If the misalignment is more than a few millimetres, you may need to chisel the mortise slightly and use longer screws (2.5 inch/65 mm screws into the door frame stud greatly improve security too).

  4. Plane or shim the door if it has shifted seasonally

If the door swells in summer and the jam only appears in humid weather, apply wax or furniture polish to the bolt to reduce friction. For severe seasonal movement, a door may need planing (trimming) or the hinges may need adjustment to hang the door straighter.

  5. Re-run the door handing setup if the lock was recently installed or reset

If the jam appeared after installation or a factory reset, the motor direction may be incorrect. On Kwikset smart locks, the door handing procedure is triggered by removing and reinstalling the lock, or by holding the Program button during setup. Follow the Kwikset installation guide for your specific model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a jammed lock damage the Kwikset motor?

Repeated jam events will wear the motor faster than normal use. The motor is rated for thousands of cycles, so an occasional jam is not immediately damaging. However, if the underlying alignment issue is not fixed and the lock jams every time it operates, the motor lifespan will be significantly shortened.

My Kwikset locks and unlocks fine when I manually turn it but jams when the motor operates — why?

Motor-driven and manual operation apply different force and speed to the bolt. A slight misalignment that a person's hand can compensate for by adjusting angle or applying force may still stop the motor. Fix the alignment so the bolt enters the strike plate freely with zero resistance — the motor cannot apply lateral force.
