Low Battery Alert
Kwikset Smart Lock
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Kwikset smart locks indicate low battery with a red LED flash and a series of beeps when you use the keypad or lock button. Most Kwikset models give you 1–3 weeks of warning before the lock stops working. Replace the batteries with fresh AA alkaline batteries as soon as you see the alert — do not wait until the lock fails.
Affected Models
- Kwikset Halo
- Kwikset Halo Touch
- Kwikset SmartCode 888
- Kwikset SmartCode 914
- Kwikset Convert Smart Lock
Common Causes
- AA batteries have depleted to the low threshold after normal use (typically 6–12 months)
- Cold weather has temporarily reduced battery capacity, triggering the alert even with relatively new batteries
- Low-quality or off-brand batteries were installed and have shorter-than-expected life
- High access frequency (many lock/unlock cycles per day) has drained the batteries faster than average
How to Fix It
-
Locate the battery compartment on the interior side of the lock
The battery pack is on the interior escutcheon (the part inside your home). On Kwikset Halo and SmartCode models, remove the interior cover by sliding it upward or pressing a release tab. The battery tray holds 4 AA batteries.
-
Remove all four AA batteries and insert fresh alkaline replacements
Use high-quality alkaline AA batteries (Duracell or Energizer). Do not use lithium batteries unless the manual specifically allows them, as they can exceed the voltage range the lock expects. Do not mix old and new batteries — replace all four at the same time.
-
Match the polarity markings in the tray
Each battery slot has + and - markings embossed in the plastic. Insert each battery with the correct orientation. A single reversed battery will prevent the lock from operating.
-
Reassemble the cover and test the lock
Slide or click the interior cover back on. Test the lock manually from inside to confirm normal operation. The low battery indicator should now be clear. If the red flash or beep returns immediately after installing new batteries, check the battery contacts for corrosion.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Kwikset batteries typically last?
Under average residential use (10–15 lock cycles per day), a fresh set of AA alkaline batteries lasts approximately 6–12 months on Kwikset Halo models. Halo Touch (fingerprint) and models with Wi-Fi active consume more power and may need replacement every 3–6 months. The Kwikset app shows battery percentage on Wi-Fi-enabled models.
What happens if my Kwikset battery dies completely?
If the internal battery completely dies, the keypad will not function. Most Kwikset locks have a 9V battery terminal on the exterior keypad — touching a fresh 9V battery to the terminals provides enough emergency power for one or two cycles to let you get inside. Check the manual for the location of the emergency terminal on your specific model.
