Motor Jam Detected
Kwikset Smart Lock
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Motor Jam Detected' means the lock's motor stalled while trying to turn the bolt — the motor couldn't complete the lock or unlock motion.
Most often the bolt is binding against the strike plate, the door is misaligned, or the batteries are weak.
Test by manually unlocking with the key — should turn smoothly.
If it grinds or sticks, fix the binding before the smart lock can work properly.
Affected Models
- Kwikset Halo
- Kwikset SmartCode 916
- Kwikset SmartCode 888
- Kwikset SmartCode 955
Common Causes
- Bolt binding against strike plate
- Door misaligned (sagging or warped)
- Strike plate hole too small or off-center
- Weak batteries reducing motor torque
- Motor failing after years of use
How to Fix It
-
Test bolt operation with a key.
Use the physical key to lock and unlock the bolt.
Should turn smoothly with light resistance.
If it grinds, sticks, or requires force, the bolt is binding mechanically.
The smart lock's motor isn't strong enough to overcome significant binding. -
Inspect the strike plate.
Look at the metal plate on the door frame where the bolt enters.
The hole should be slightly larger than the bolt and well-aligned.
If the bolt has to push the strike plate aside to enter, alignment is off.
Adjust by loosening strike plate screws and re-positioning, or chisel the hole slightly larger. -
Check door alignment.
Close the door and look at the gap with the frame.
Should be even all around.
If the door sags, the hinges are loose or worn.
Tighten hinge screws (use longer screws if hinges pull from the frame).
Aligned door is essential for smart lock operation. -
Replace batteries with fresh alkaline.
Weak batteries reduce motor torque significantly.
Replace with fresh alkaline AA batteries (4 in most Kwikset models).
Don't use rechargeables — lower voltage causes motor jams.
Lithium batteries last longer and provide stronger output, but cost more. -
Send for repair if persistent.
If bolt operates smoothly with key, batteries are fresh, and Motor Jam Detected still happens, the motor is failing.
Smart lock motors have rated lives of 25,000-50,000 cycles.
If yours is past that, replacement of the lock unit may be needed.
Kwikset support can advise on warranty if applicable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can humid weather cause Motor Jam?
Yes — wood doors and frames swell in humid weather, increasing binding.
If Motor Jam is seasonal (worse in summer humidity), it's likely binding-related.
Adjust the strike plate slightly larger to give the bolt more room, or address door warping.
This is a common seasonal issue.
Will the lock retry after Motor Jam?
On most Kwikset models, no — once Motor Jam is detected, it stops attempting that motion to prevent damage.
You have to use the physical key or wait for the binding to ease (e.g., humidity drops) and try again.
Don't repeatedly press lock/unlock during Motor Jam — that just stresses the motor more.
