Programming Code Mismatch

Kwikset Smart Lock

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Programming Code Mismatch' means the master/programming code you entered was wrong.
Either you typed the wrong code, the master has been changed and you forgot the new one, or factory default needs to be checked.
Try entering it again carefully.
If repeated attempts fail, you've forgotten the master and need to factory reset (loses all programmed user codes).

Affected Models

  • Kwikset Halo
  • Kwikset SmartCode 916
  • Kwikset SmartCode 888
  • Kwikset SmartCode 955

Common Causes

  • Mistyped master code
  • Master code was changed and you forgot the new one
  • Default master code was changed at install but you don't have the new one
  • Multiple wrong attempts triggering temporary lockout
  • Confusion about which code is the master

How to Fix It

  1. Try entering the master code again.

    Take your time.
    Press each digit deliberately.
If you've made several wrong attempts, the lock may be in lockout — wait a minute and try again.
Common mistake: confusing user codes with the master code (different roles).

  2. Find the default master code.

Kwikset locks ship with a default master code printed on a sticker inside the battery compartment.
Remove the battery cover and look for it.
If never changed, the default still works.
Note this code somewhere safe and replace the cover.

  3. Try the default if changes are unclear.

If the default master is on the sticker but you've already changed it, try the default anyway — sometimes resets revert to the default.
If the default works, you've found access; immediately set a new master and write it down.

  4. Use the app or physical key as workaround.

If the master code is genuinely lost, you can still operate the lock with:
    1. The Kwikset app on your phone (if you've already paired it).
    2. The physical key in the cylinder.
This buys you time while figuring out next steps.

  5. Factory reset as last resort.

If master is completely lost: factory reset.
Procedure varies by model — typically: remove battery cover → press and hold the program button while reinserting batteries → follow setup procedure.
This loses all programmed user codes and the master.
You'll set up the lock from scratch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a recovery option besides factory reset?

Generally no — Kwikset locks don't have a manufacturer override or master backdoor.
This is by design for security.
If you've genuinely lost the master and don't have app access, factory reset is the only path.
Note master codes carefully and keep them somewhere safe.

Will factory reset damage the lock?

No — factory reset is a normal procedure.
It returns the lock to the same state as when it shipped.
You'll need to re-pair with the app and re-program user codes, but the lock itself is unaffected.
Many locks are factory-reset multiple times during their life without issue.
