Battery Critical
Nuki Smart Lock
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Battery Critical' means your Nuki Smart Lock has very low battery and will stop functioning soon.
Don't ignore — once batteries die completely, you'll need the physical key to enter.
Replace the AA batteries with fresh alkaline ones, or the integrated rechargeable battery pack on Pro models.
Battery life is typically 6-12 months for the standard models, recharging needed every 2-3 months on Pro.
Affected Models
- Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 Pro
- Nuki Smart Lock 3.0
- Nuki Smart Lock 2.0
Common Causes
- Batteries simply at end of life
- Cold weather reducing battery output
- Heavy use (many lock/unlock events) draining faster
- Batteries past their freshness date when installed
- Rechargeable pack failing on Pro models
How to Fix It
-
Open the battery compartment.
Most Nuki models have a sliding cover on the lock body that exposes the batteries.
Slide or pop off the cover.
You'll see 4 AA batteries (standard models) or a rechargeable pack (Pro models). -
Replace with fresh batteries.
Standard models: install 4 fresh alkaline AA batteries.
Don't mix old and new.
Don't use rechargeable AAs (lower voltage causes motor problems).
Lithium AAs are best for cold climates — don't lose voltage as quickly in cold weather. -
For Pro models — recharge.
Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 Pro has a rechargeable battery pack.
Remove the pack from the lock.
Charge with the supplied USB-C cable for 4-6 hours.
Reinstall.
The pack typically lasts 2-3 months between charges. -
Replace the cover and verify.
Slide the cover back on.
The lock should boot up — you'll hear it run a calibration cycle.
Check the Nuki app — battery level should show high (90%+) after fresh batteries.
Battery Critical warning clears. -
Set up battery alerts in the app.
Open the Nuki app → Settings → Battery Notifications.
Configure alerts at 30% and 10% so you get warning before Critical.
Replace batteries when alerts trigger, not when Critical appears.
This prevents getting locked out by depletion.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do Nuki batteries last?
Standard 3.0 with alkaline AAs: 6-12 months typical.
Pro 3.0 with rechargeable: 2-3 months between charges.
Heavy use (many users, frequent unlocks) shortens both.
Cold weather cuts alkaline life to 50% — switch to lithium AAs in cold climates.
Can I use the lock during charging?
Standard models: while replacing AAs, the lock won't operate (5-minute downtime is typical).
Pro models: keep a spare charged pack for swap-replace if you can't tolerate downtime.
Or use the physical key briefly while batteries are being replaced or pack is charging.
