Motor Blocked
Nuki Smart Lock
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
A Nuki motor blocked error means the motor stalled before completing a turn. Most cases are caused by door misalignment increasing torque, low batteries, or a key still inserted in the cylinder from the outside.
Affected Models
- Nuki Smart Lock 3.0
- Nuki Smart Lock 3.0 Pro
- Nuki Smart Lock 4.0 Pro
- Nuki Smart Lock 4th Generation
Common Causes
- Door or strike misaligned causing the bolt to fight the frame
- Low battery voltage reducing motor torque
- A key inserted in the cylinder from the outside (Nuki cannot turn through it)
- Damaged or seized euro cylinder
- Nuki lock not securely clamped to the cylinder
How to Fix It
-
Remove any key from the outside cylinder.
On a euro cylinder, a key inserted from the outside prevents the cylinder from turning, even with the inside thumbturn (or Nuki) trying to turn. Remove the outside key — this fixes a surprising number of motor blocked errors.
-
Test the cylinder by hand.
Detach Nuki from the cylinder and turn the cylinder using a key or thumbturn. It should rotate smoothly. Resistance means the cylinder needs lubrication or alignment work.
-
Realign the strike plate.
If the deadbolt rubs the strike plate when extended, the door has shifted or the strike is not in the right position. Loosen and shift the strike, or file the opening, until the bolt slides cleanly.
-
Replace the batteries.
Open the Nuki and replace the batteries with fresh ones (CR123A on most models, AA on the 4.0 Pro). Low batteries reduce motor torque significantly.
-
Recalibrate the lock.
After alignment and battery work, run the calibration in the Nuki app. This teaches the lock the new (smoother) torque profile and clears the motor blocked error.
When to Call a Professional
If door alignment and battery checks do not stop motor blocked errors, Nuki support can run remote diagnostics. Persistent motor faults may indicate a hardware issue requiring replacement.
