3 Red Flashes (Lockout)

Schlage Smart Lock

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

3 red flashes on a Schlage smart lock means the keypad is locked out after too many wrong code attempts. Wait 30 seconds (or longer for repeated lockouts) before trying again. Use the physical key or the Schlage Home app to enter while waiting.

Affected Models

  • Schlage Encode
  • Schlage Encode Plus
  • Schlage Connect
  • Schlage Sense
  • Schlage Camelot

Common Causes

  • 5 or more incorrect codes entered in succession
  • Children or visitors trying random codes
  • Possible attempted unauthorised entry
  • Keypad stuck digit causing repeated misreads (rare)
  • Worn or dirty keypad causing legitimate codes to read as wrong

How to Fix It

  1. Wait for the lockout to expire.

First lockout: 30 seconds. Second consecutive lockout: 1 minute. Third: 2 minutes. The wait extends with each retry. Be patient — the timer is a security feature.

  2. Use the physical key while waiting.

All Schlage smart locks include a physical key cylinder. Use it to enter while waiting for the keypad lockout to clear. The keypad lockout does not affect physical key operation.

  3. Use the app to unlock.

If your Schlage lock is connected to the Schlage Home app or HomeKit/Alexa, you can unlock from your phone even during keypad lockout. Open the app and tap Unlock.

  4. Investigate if you did not cause the lockout.

Check the Activity log in the Schlage Home app. If repeated failed entries are not from you or family, an attempted unauthorised entry has occurred. Consider reviewing camera footage if you have one.

  5. Clean the keypad if legitimate codes are failing.

If lockouts happen with the correct code, the keypad may have a stuck or worn digit. Clean with a barely damp cloth. Persistent issues may need keypad replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the Schlage lockout last?

The first lockout is 30 seconds. Each subsequent lockout in the same session extends — 1 minute, 2 minutes, 4 minutes. The timer resets after a successful unlock or several minutes of inactivity.

Can I disable the keypad lockout?

No — the lockout is a fundamental security feature on all Schlage smart locks. You cannot disable it. The intent is to slow brute-force attempts. Use the app or physical key as workarounds when needed.
