Auto-Lock Disabled
Yale Smart Lock
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Auto-Lock Disabled' means the auto-lock feature is currently turned off — the lock won't automatically engage after a delay.
Either you (or someone with admin access) disabled it, the door sense reports the door open, or a temporary 'do not auto-lock' state is active (e.g., privacy mode).
Open the Yale app, check Auto-Lock settings, and re-enable.
Verify the door is closing fully — auto-lock requires confirmed door closure.
Affected Models
- Yale Assure SL
- Yale Assure 2
- Yale Assure Lever
Common Causes
- Auto-Lock manually disabled in app settings
- Privacy mode active (intentionally disables auto-lock)
- Door sense doesn't detect door as closed
- Vacation mode with auto-lock disabled
- Recent firmware update reset the setting
How to Fix It
-
Open the Yale Access app.
Connect to the lock.
Navigate to Auto-Lock settings (usually under the lock's settings menu). -
Check whether Auto-Lock is enabled.
If the toggle is off, that's why it's disabled — turn it on.
Configure the delay (typically 30 seconds to 30 minutes after unlocking).
Save.
The lock should now auto-lock after the delay. -
Check privacy mode.
Privacy mode (sometimes called 'one-touch lock' or 'visitor mode') intentionally disables auto-lock.
It's useful when you have someone visiting and don't want the door auto-locking on them.
If active, disable it.
Auto-lock should resume. -
Verify door sense (if equipped).
Yale Assure 2 with Door Sense uses a sensor to confirm the door is closed before auto-locking.
If the door sense reports the door open, auto-lock is suppressed.
Make sure the door is closing fully and the sensor isn't misaligned.
Re-calibrate door sense if needed. -
Check vacation mode.
Vacation mode can change auto-lock behavior.
If you've activated vacation mode (planned absence), auto-lock may be modified or disabled.
Settings → Vacation Mode → review.
Adjust as needed for your current situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I always have auto-lock on?
It's a personal choice.
Pro: door always locks, you never forget.
Con: can lock you out if you step outside briefly without your phone or key.
Many users set a 5-10 minute delay so they have time to come back if they forget something.
Set the delay that works for your routine.
Why doesn't auto-lock work when I close the door?
On Yale Assure 2 with Door Sense, auto-lock starts the moment the door closes.
On older Yale Assure SL without door sense, auto-lock starts when you unlock and runs based on time elapsed regardless of door state.
Different behavior depending on your model — check your manual.
