Calibration Failed

Yale Smart Lock

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'Calibration Failed' means the Yale Assure can't determine the locked and unlocked positions of the door bolt.
Usually the bolt is binding against the strike plate or the door isn't aligned properly.
Open the door, manually unlock and lock with a key several times to verify smooth operation, then re-run calibration in the Yale app.
If calibration still fails, the strike plate needs adjustment for proper bolt alignment.

Affected Models

  • Yale Assure SL
  • Yale Assure 2
  • Yale Assure Lever
  • Yale Real Living

Common Causes

  • Bolt binding against strike plate
  • Door not aligned with frame (sagging)
  • Strike plate hole too small or off-center
  • Lock motor weakening (older locks)
  • Battery low affecting motor torque

How to Fix It

  1. Test the bolt manually with a key.

Use the physical key to lock and unlock the bolt several times.
Should turn smoothly with light resistance.
If it grinds, sticks, or requires force, the bolt is binding — fix that before re-calibrating.
The smart lock can't calibrate against a binding bolt.

  2. Inspect the strike plate.

Look at the strike plate (the metal plate on the door frame where the bolt enters).
The hole should be slightly larger than the bolt and well-aligned.
If the bolt has to push the strike plate to enter, alignment is off.
Adjust by loosening the strike plate screws and re-positioning, or chisel the hole slightly larger.

  3. Check door alignment.

Close the door and look at the gap between door and frame.
    Should be even all around.
If the door sags, the hinges are loose or worn.
Tighten hinge screws (use longer screws if hinges are pulling out of the frame).
A well-aligned door is essential for the smart lock to work.

  4. Replace batteries before calibration.

Low batteries reduce motor torque, which can cause calibration to fail intermittently.
Install fresh AA batteries (4 of them on most Yale Assure models).
Use alkaline or lithium — not rechargeable, which have lower voltage.

  5. Re-run calibration in the app.

    Open the Yale Access app.
    Settings → Calibration → Run.
The lock will turn the bolt to learn locked and unlocked positions.
Don't touch the door during calibration.
    Should complete in 30-60 seconds.
If still 'Calibration Failed', the lock motor or controller has a fault — Yale support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does calibration fail after working fine?

Doors and frames shift over time — humidity changes wood dimensions, hinges wear, the foundation may settle slightly.
What worked at install may bind months later.
If calibration was fine and now fails, check for new binding caused by environmental changes.

Will the lock still work without calibration?

Yes — manually with the key.
Smart features (auto-lock, schedules, app control) won't work properly until calibration succeeds.
For temporary use, manual operation is fine.
Plan to fix calibration soon — that's the main reason you bought a smart lock.
