Code Already Exists

Yale Smart Lock

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Code Already Exists' means the PIN you're trying to add is already programmed for another user.
The lock won't accept duplicate codes.
Pick a different code, or delete the existing assignment first.
Open the Yale Access app and review existing codes — you'll see which user has the duplicate.
Choose a different unique code for the new user.

Affected Models

  • Yale Assure SL
  • Yale Assure 2
  • Yale Assure Lever

Common Causes

  • Duplicate PIN attempted
  • Old user code wasn't deleted before reassigning
  • Master code or installer code conflicting
  • App showing stale data — code already deleted but lock still shows it
  • Code in use by hidden system code

How to Fix It

  1. Open the Yale Access app and view codes.

Connect to the lock in the app.
Navigate to the access codes / user codes section.
You'll see all programmed codes (most apps show partial codes for security — last 2 digits or similar).
Find which existing code matches the new one you're trying to add.

  2. Pick a different unique code.

Easiest fix: choose a different 4-8 digit PIN that's not already used.
Avoid common patterns (1234, 0000, your house number, birthdays).
Pick something memorable to the user but not predictable to others.
Try the new code in the app — should accept if unique.

  3. Or delete the existing code first.

If you want to reuse the PIN for a new user, delete the existing assignment first.
Open the existing user in the app, delete their code.
Then add the new user with that code.
Don't try to overwrite — the lock requires explicit deletion.

  4. Force-sync the lock.

If the app shows the code is gone but the lock still says 'Code Already Exists', the lock has stale data.
Settings → Sync Now (or similar option).
    Wait for sync to complete.
    Try adding the code again.

  5. Check master/installer codes.

Yale locks have system codes (master code) that you may have set during installation.
If your new code conflicts with the master, that's the cause.
Either change the master to a different unique value, or pick a different new code.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many user codes can a Yale lock hold?

Yale Assure SL: 25 user codes plus the master.
Yale Assure 2: 250 user codes via app, 25 via keypad direct entry.
If you're hitting 'Code Already Exists' near these limits, the lock may be telling you it's full rather than duplicate.
Delete unused codes to free slots.

Can I see which user has my desired code?

For privacy, most apps don't show full codes back to you — usually last few digits.
If multiple users have similar codes, you may need to ask them or delete and re-create.
Don't write codes down where others can see — that defeats the purpose.
