Energy Meter Stuck
TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Kasa energy meter shows 0W or frozen reading when: nothing is actually plugged in, plugged-in device is in standby drawing under 0.5W (below threshold), or the metering chip is hung after firmware update.
First confirm something is actually drawing power.
If yes, restart the plug via app, then update firmware.
Energy data history continues to update even if real-time reading hangs.
Affected Models
- TP-Link Kasa KP115
- TP-Link Kasa EP25
- TP-Link Kasa KP125
- TP-Link Kasa HS300 power strip
Common Causes
- Nothing actively drawing power (LEDs/standby below 0.5W threshold)
- Plug in standby mode (smart plugs have minimum sensitivity)
- Firmware bug causing meter freeze
- App caching old reading (force quit/reopen)
- KP115 metering chip failed (hardware, rare)
How to Fix It
-
Confirm load is real.
Plug a known load — desk lamp, fan, or 5+ watt device.
App should show real-time wattage within 1-2 minutes.
If a 60W lamp shows 0W, the meter has a real fault. -
Restart the plug.
Kasa app → plug → Settings → Restart.
Plug power-cycles internally.
Resets metering chip state.
Reading should resume within 1-2 minutes after restart. -
Force-quit Kasa app.
App may cache old readings.
Close the app completely (swipe up in iOS, or recent apps menu in Android).
Reopen.
App fetches fresh data. -
Update firmware.
Kasa app → plug → Settings → Firmware Update.
Apply if available.
Energy meter bugs have been fixed in updates over the past year. -
Check Energy Usage history.
Kasa app → plug → Energy Usage tab.
If history graph still updates daily, the meter IS working — just real-time reading is delayed.
Refresh the history to confirm.
Real-time reading lags by 1-2 minutes; daily totals are accurate. -
Factory reset if persistent.
Hold reset button on the plug for 10 seconds (until LED rapidly flashes).
Plug factory resets.
Re-add via Kasa app → Add Device.
Re-pair to your account; energy history resets to zero.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Kasa show different watts than my electric meter?
Kasa metering accuracy is +/- 5%.
Your utility meter is calibrated more precisely.
For tracking individual device usage relative to itself, Kasa is fine.
For utility-level audit, don't rely on smart plug data alone.
