Sync Failed

Oura Smart Ring

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Oura shows 'Sync failed' when the app could not transfer data from the ring even though it could see the ring.
This is different from a connection failure — connection works, but the data transfer step did not complete.
Cause is usually a long sync (multiple days of data), a flaky Bluetooth link, or the app's background sync not getting enough time on the phone.
Most cases clear with a manual sync from inside the app.

Affected Models

  • Oura Ring Generation 3 Heritage
  • Oura Ring Generation 3 Horizon
  • Oura Ring Generation 4

Common Causes

  • Ring has not synced for several days, large data backlog
  • Bluetooth dropped partway through the sync
  • App was force-closed by the OS during sync
  • Phone Low Power mode throttled the app
  • Oura cloud server brief outage
  • Ring time-of-day setting drifted (rare, after long offline period)

How to Fix It

  1. Open the app and pull to sync.

    Open the Oura app.
From the home screen, swipe down to trigger a manual sync.
The progress indicator shows transfer state.
Most sync failures clear on a manual retry from a fresh app launch.

  2. Stay close to the phone.

Keep the ring within a few feet of the phone during the sync.
If the sync is for several days of data, it can take 5-15 minutes — interruptions restart the transfer.

  3. Check Bluetooth and phone state.

Bluetooth on, no Low Power mode (which throttles background tasks), Oura app permissions all granted.
Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode → off (iOS).
Settings → Battery → Battery Saver → off (Android).

  4. Force-quit and reopen the app.

    Close the Oura app completely.
    Reopen.
    The app rescans and retries.
Many stuck-sync states clear after a clean app restart.

  5. Charge the ring briefly.

If the ring battery is below 10%, sync becomes unreliable.
Place the ring on the charger for 15-30 minutes, then sync again.
You do not need a full charge — just enough to support a stable Bluetooth link.

  6. Sign out and back in.

Settings → Profile → Sign Out.
Sign back in with the same account.
This refreshes the auth token between app and Oura cloud, which sometimes blocks a sync from completing.

  7. Check Oura status if widespread.

If multiple Oura users on social media or community forums report the same issue, Oura's cloud is having a brief outage.
Sync recovers automatically once Oura's service is restored.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose data if sync keeps failing?

The ring stores about a week of data on board.
As long as you sync within that window, nothing is lost.
Beyond a week, the oldest data may roll off — so do not let sync stay broken for many days without addressing it.
