Keeps Restarting

Sharp Smart TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Sharp TV that keeps restarting has usually had a firmware update interrupted or is overheating. Unplugging for 60 seconds often breaks the loop. If reboots continue, a factory reset from the recovery menu restores clean firmware and stops the cycling.

Affected Models

  • Sharp Aquos 4K
  • Sharp 4T-C Series
  • Sharp Android TV
  • Sharp LC Series
  • Sharp 2T-C Series

Common Causes

  • A firmware update was interrupted, leaving corrupted boot data
  • The TV is overheating — thermal protection forces repeated shutdowns
  • A third-party app installed on Android TV is crashing the system
  • The auto-update feature installed a buggy firmware version
  • A failing capacitor on the main board causes voltage instability

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds. Plug back in and allow one full boot before doing anything else.

This breaks most transient restart loops caused by a firmware crash.

  2. Ensure the TV has at least 10 cm of clearance on all sides and is not inside a closed cabinet.

A TV restarting after 20 to 40 minutes of use is overheating.

  3. If the TV reaches the home screen briefly, immediately go to Settings → Device Preferences → About → System Update to install pending firmware.

A partial install can loop until completed or until a factory reset.

  4. Perform a factory reset: Settings → Device Preferences → Reset → Factory Data Reset → Erase Everything.

On older AQUOS models: Menu → Setup → Reset → Factory Reset.

  5. If the TV cannot stay on long enough to access settings, use the hardware reset: with TV unplugged, hold the physical Reset button (pinhole on back) while plugging in. Hold for 20 seconds.

The TV will boot into recovery mode and begin a factory reset.

When to Call a Professional

If a factory reset does not stop the loop and overheating is not the cause, the main board may have a hardware fault. Contact Sharp support — restart loops from interrupted firmware updates are sometimes covered as warranty cases.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sharp TV started restarting right after a software update — is that connected?

Yes — an interrupted or buggy firmware update is the most common cause of restart loops. A factory reset clears the corrupted firmware. Report the issue to Sharp support to alert them to the problematic update version.

The TV reboots only on one specific app — is it hardware?

No — app-specific reboots are a software issue. Uninstall and reinstall the app, or clear its data from Settings → Apps → [App] → Clear Cache and Clear Data.

After a factory reset will I lose my apps and accounts?

Yes — a factory reset erases all local data. Signing back into your Google account on Android TV automatically restores installed apps. Streaming service subscriptions are stored server-side and remain active.
