1106

Sony Smart TV

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 1106 appears during firmware installation.
The download succeeded but the install step failed — usually because power was interrupted, the file was corrupted, or there's not enough free storage.
Power-cycle the TV, free up storage, and retry from Settings > Software Update.
Most cases clear on the second attempt.

Affected Models

  • Sony Bravia A95L OLED
  • Sony Bravia X95L Mini LED
  • Sony Bravia X90L
  • Sony Bravia A80L
  • Sony Google TV (current generation)

Common Causes

  • Power flicker during firmware install (most common)
  • Insufficient internal storage for the update
  • Corrupted firmware file in the download
  • Failed install left the TV in an in-between state
  • Conflicting installed app preventing the update

How to Fix It

  1. Cold-restart the TV.

Unplug the TV from the wall for 60 seconds.
Plug back in and let it boot fully.
This clears any in-memory state from the failed install and lets the TV start fresh.

  2. Check internal storage.

    Settings > System > Storage.
Look at free space — should be at least 2GB free for an update.
If it's full, uninstall apps you don't use.
Updates fail at the install step when there's not enough room to extract.

  3. Retry the update.

Settings > System > About > System software update > Check for updates.
If the update is found again, install it.
The download may already be cached so it'll go straight to install.
Don't unplug the TV during install — it can take 10–20 minutes.

  4. If retry fails, use USB update.

Download the firmware from sony.com/support for your model.
Format a USB drive as FAT32, copy the firmware file to the root.
Plug into the TV's USB port.
The TV detects the file and offers an update.
USB updates skip the network and are more reliable than over-the-air.

  5. Contact Sony support if 1106 persists.

If both network and USB updates fail with 1106, the internal storage may be corrupted.
Sony service can repair or replace the storage module under warranty.
Don't continue retrying — repeated failures can worsen storage corruption.

When to Call a Professional

If error 1106 keeps appearing on every retry and the TV is on the latest publicly-available firmware already, contact Sony support.
Repeated failed updates can indicate corrupt internal storage and require service.
Sony Bravia warranty (1–2 years standard) covers update-related faults during this period.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I keep my Sony TV updated?

Yes for security and app compatibility.
Older firmware loses access to streaming apps as those apps require minimum versions.
Sony issues updates for 5–7 years on most Bravia models.
Once your TV stops getting updates, expect new apps to gradually become unavailable.

Is USB update safer than network update?

Generally yes.
Network updates depend on download stability — a Wi-Fi blip during the download corrupts the file and triggers 1106.
USB updates skip that entirely.
If your network is flaky, USB is the more reliable path even if the network update technically also works.
