Pairing Failed

TCL Roku TV

Severity: Moderate

What it means

'Pairing failed' on a TCL Roku TV means the TV couldn't establish a wireless link with your Roku Voice Remote (the kind with a microphone button or headphone jack — these talk to the TV over Wi-Fi Direct, not infrared).
The usual causes are weak batteries, the remote being out of range during pairing, or the pairing button not being held long enough.
Older 'simple' Roku remotes that point at the TV are infrared-only and don't need pairing — only the Voice and Enhanced remotes do.

Affected Models

  • TCL Roku TVs paired with the Roku Voice Remote
  • TCL Roku TVs paired with the Roku Enhanced Remote (with headphone jack)
  • TCL Roku TVs paired with the Roku Voice Remote Pro
  • Note: basic point-at-the-TV infrared Roku remotes don't pair and don't show this message

Common Causes

  • Remote batteries low — the most common cause
  • Remote was too far from the TV during the pairing sequence
  • Pairing button wasn't held long enough (needs three to five seconds)
  • Remote already paired to a different Roku player or TV
  • TV is using a Wi-Fi channel that interferes with the remote's signal
  • Pairing button physically damaged or stuck
  • Roku Voice Remote Pro — its rechargeable battery is fully flat

How to Fix It

  1. Put in fresh batteries (or charge it).

Open the back of the Roku Voice Remote and replace the two AA or AAA batteries with brand-new alkalines — not rechargeables, not leftovers.
The Voice Remote Pro charges over USB-C; plug it in for an hour before trying again.
A flat battery is the cause of most pairing failures even when the remote still seems to power on.

  2. Hold the pairing button until the LED flashes.

Open the back of the remote — the pairing button is inside the battery compartment on most models.
Press and hold it for a full five seconds while standing within a few feet of the TV.
Look for a small LED on the remote to start flashing; that's pairing mode.
Letting go too early is a common reason it fails.

  3. Restart the TV, then try again.

Unplug the TV from the wall for a full minute and plug it back in.
Wait for the home screen, then hold the pairing button on the remote again.
A power-cycled TV listens for new pairings during the first 30 seconds of boot, which is often when stubborn remotes finally connect.

  4. Get within a few feet during pairing.

Don't try to pair from across the room.
Stand within one metre / three feet of the TV — closer is better.
Once paired, you can use the remote from across the room as normal, but the initial handshake works best at short range.

  5. Unpair the remote from another Roku device.

If the remote came from another Roku player or TV, that device may still own it.
On the original Roku, go to Settings > Remotes & devices > Forget this remote.
Then run the pairing step on the TCL Roku TV again.

  6. If a different remote works, replace the broken one.

Find any Roku Voice Remote — including the cheap basic one without the headphone jack — and try pairing that to the TV.
If a different remote pairs fine, the original is faulty; Roku and TCL sell replacement remotes, and a free Roku mobile app on your phone can act as a full remote in the meantime.
If no remote pairs and the TV's pairing screen never appears, contact TCL support — that points at the TV's wireless chip, not the remote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my old TCL Roku remote need pairing?

Only if it's a Voice Remote, Enhanced Remote, or Voice Remote Pro — those use Wi-Fi Direct and need pairing.
You can tell because they don't need to be pointed at the TV and they have a microphone button (or a headphone jack on the side).
The simpler Roku remotes that need to be pointed straight at the TV are infrared-only, never pair, and don't show 'Pairing failed' — they just need fresh batteries and a clear line of sight to the TV's sensor.
If your remote works from across the room without aiming it, you have a paired remote; if you must aim it at the TV, it's infrared.
