Screen Flickering

TCL Roku TV

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Disable Local Dimming: press Star (*) → Picture Settings → Local Contrast → Off — aggressive dimming causes visible brightness flicker. Re-seat all HDMI cables since a loose connection causes signal dropout that looks like screen flicker. If flickering is a pattern of horizontal lines or patches, the LED backlight strip is failing.

Affected Models

  • TCL 5-Series (QLED)
  • TCL 6-Series (Mini-LED)
  • TCL 4-Series
  • TCL 8-Series (Mini-LED)
  • TCL QM8 / QM9 series

Common Causes

  • Local Dimming / Local Contrast adjusting backlight zones too aggressively
  • Loose HDMI cable causing intermittent signal dropout
  • Motion smoothing (Action Smoothing) causing frame rate conflicts
  • TCL Mini-LED backlight zone failure (hardware fault)
  • Refresh rate mismatch between TV and connected device

How to Fix It

  1. Disable Local Dimming / Local Contrast

Press Star (*) on the Roku remote → Picture Settings → Local Contrast → Off (or Low). TCL QLED and Mini-LED sets use aggressive local dimming that causes visible flicker on some content.

  2. Re-seat all HDMI cables

Disconnect and reconnect every HDMI cable at both ends. A cable that is partially inserted will cause signal interruptions that appear as rapid screen flicker.

  3. Disable Action Smoothing

Press Star (*) → Picture Settings → Action Smoothing → Off. Motion interpolation at an incorrect frame rate causes strobing or flickering on TCL panels.

  4. Test without any HDMI sources

Go to the Roku home screen with no HDMI devices connected. If flickering disappears, the source device or its cable is causing the problem, not the TV panel.

  5. Check for a Roku OS update

Settings → System → System Update → Check Now. Some TCL Mini-LED flicker issues have been fixed via firmware. Update to the latest version and retest.

When to Call a Professional

If flickering shows as rectangular patches or horizontal bands that appear regardless of input source, one or more Mini-LED backlight zones have failed — contact TCL support for a warranty repair.

Frequently Asked Questions

TCL 6-Series Mini-LED flickering in dark scenes — is this normal?

Some micro-flicker in very dark scenes is a known characteristic of aggressive Mini-LED local dimming. Reduce Local Contrast to Low or Off at Star (*) → Picture Settings → Local Contrast.

TCL Roku TV flickers only when connected to a PC — why?

The PC's refresh rate or resolution may not be fully supported by the TCL panel. Set the PC display output to 60 Hz and a standard resolution (1920×1080 or 3840×2160). Avoid custom or unsupported refresh rates.

TCL TV screen has a flickering patch in one corner — hardware or settings?

A localised flickering patch that does not move is almost always a failing Mini-LED backlight zone. This is a hardware fault. Contact TCL support — most panels are covered under the manufacturer's warranty.
