Activation Required
Apple Smart Watch
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
Apple Watch shows 'Activation required' or 'Activation Lock' when the watch needs to be linked to an Apple ID before it can be used.
This appears after a factory reset, on a second-hand watch, or when Activation Lock could not verify the original owner.
If the watch is yours, signing in with the Apple ID it was previously paired to clears it.
If you bought it second-hand, the original owner must remove it from their account.
Affected Models
- Apple Watch Series 3 and later
- Apple Watch SE (1st and 2nd gen)
- Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2
- Apple Watch Series 9 and 10
Common Causes
- Watch was just reset — needs re-pairing to your Apple ID
- Bought second-hand and Activation Lock not removed by previous owner
- Apple ID password recently changed
- Watch was paired to a family member's Apple ID before
- iCloud account temporarily unavailable
How to Fix It
-
Sign in with the Apple ID.
On the watch, when prompted, enter the Apple ID and password the watch was previously paired to.
If you forgot the password, use Apple ID password recovery on iforgot.apple.com.
The watch unlocks once Apple confirms the credentials. -
Use the iPhone to pair fresh.
If the watch is yours but unpairing went wrong, open the Watch app on your iPhone.
Tap 'Pair New Watch'.
Hold the watch close and follow the on-screen pairing flow.
This re-establishes the link cleanly. -
Remove from previous owner's iCloud.
If you bought the watch second-hand, the previous owner must sign in to icloud.com → Find My → All Devices, select the watch, and tap 'Remove from Account'.
Without this, no new owner can activate the watch. -
Verify Apple ID password.
If your Apple ID password recently changed, the watch may not have the new credentials yet.
Sign in to appleid.apple.com on a phone or computer to confirm the password.
Then enter that on the watch. -
Try a known network.
Activation needs a live internet connection through the iPhone.
If the iPhone is on a captive WiFi (hotel, work) without full internet, activation can stall.
Try at home on a normal WiFi to rule out the network. -
Contact Apple Support if stuck.
If you bought the watch from a legitimate seller and they cannot remove it (lost their account, etc.), Apple Support may be able to help with proof of purchase.
Without proof of purchase, Apple cannot remove Activation Lock — that is the whole point of the feature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Activation Lock be bypassed?
No — that is the security feature working as designed.
Activation Lock makes stolen Apple Watches useless to thieves.
If you cannot prove ownership, the watch cannot be activated.
Always check Activation Lock status before buying second-hand.
