Plug Into Power

Fitbit Smart Watch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Fitbit shows 'Plug into power' or an empty battery icon with a small charging cable graphic when the battery is too low to operate.
The device powers off automatically until placed on a charger.
Fix: connect the proprietary Fitbit charging cable, plug into a USB power source, and wait at least 15 minutes before pressing any buttons.
Most Fitbits boot up automatically once enough charge is restored.

Affected Models

  • Fitbit Sense and Sense 2
  • Fitbit Versa, Versa 2, 3, and 4
  • Fitbit Charge 5 and 6
  • Fitbit Inspire 2 and 3
  • Fitbit Luxe

Common Causes

  • Battery fully drained from extended use
  • Sat unused for weeks and self-discharged
  • Fitbit app battery saver did not engage
  • Charging cable damaged or data-only
  • Wall adapter underpowered
  • Charging contacts on the device dirty

How to Fix It

  1. Connect the proprietary cable.

Fitbits use model-specific charging cables — Charge cables do not work on Versa and vice versa.
Confirm you have the right cable for your model.
The cable clips magnetically to the back of the device with a positive snap.

  2. Plug into a wall adapter.

Use a 5V/1A or higher wall adapter.
Computer USB ports often deliver too little current to revive a fully dead Fitbit.
A phone wall charger usually works.

  3. Wait 15-30 minutes.

A fully discharged Fitbit needs to climb to a safe boot voltage.
Do not press buttons during this time.
The screen lights up automatically once enough charge is restored.

  4. Clean the charging contacts.

Look at the metal contacts on the back of the Fitbit.
Sweat, lotion, and skin oil can leave a film that prevents charging.
Wipe firmly with a microfibre cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.
    Let dry before reconnecting.

  5. Try a different cable.

Fitbit charging cables wear out, especially the older Charge HR generation.
If you have a spare or can borrow one, try it.
Generic Fitbit-compatible cables are 5-15 USD on Amazon — keep one as a spare.

  6. Try a different outlet.

    Wall adapters fail without warning.
Plug into a different room's outlet to rule out the adapter or socket.
If a different outlet works, the original adapter or socket was the issue.

  7. Contact Fitbit support if dead.

If the Fitbit shows nothing after 60 minutes on a known-good charger and outlet, the battery has likely failed.
Out-of-warranty Fitbits cost the same to replace as repair — Fitbit usually offers a discount on a new device for support contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Fitbit drain so quickly when not worn?

Fitbits never sleep deeply — they keep the heart rate sensor and accelerometer running for activity tracking.
Sitting in a drawer, they still drain about 1-2% per day.
For long storage, charge to 50-70% first and check monthly.
