Tap to Restart

Fitbit Smart Watch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Fitbit shows 'Tap to restart' (or stays stuck on the Fitbit logo) when watchOS-side software has crashed and the device needs a restart.
Tapping the screen as instructed kicks off a fresh boot.
If tap does not respond, a hold-the-button restart usually recovers.
Most cases trace to an app crash, a failed firmware update, or a low-battery boot loop.

Affected Models

  • Fitbit Sense and Sense 2
  • Fitbit Versa, Versa 2, 3, and 4
  • Fitbit Charge 5 and 6
  • Fitbit Inspire 2 and 3
  • Fitbit Luxe

Common Causes

  • Third-party watch face or app crashed
  • Firmware update interrupted
  • Low battery causing boot loop
  • Memory leak in a long-running session
  • Recently installed Fitbit app version with a bug
  • Heat-related lockup (sauna or hot tub)

How to Fix It

  1. Tap the screen as instructed.

If 'Tap to restart' is showing, tap it.
    The Fitbit reboots normally.
You return to the watch face within a few seconds.

  2. If tap does not respond, force restart.

Hold the side button (Versa/Sense) for 10 seconds, or the small button on the bottom (Charge/Inspire).
    The Fitbit logo appears.
    Release.
    Boot completes within 30-60 seconds.

  3. Charge first if battery is low.

If the Fitbit boot-loops repeatedly, the battery is too low to complete startup.
Place on the charger for 15-30 minutes, then attempt restart.
Devices need a minimum charge to boot properly.

  4. Remove a problem watch face.

If 'Tap to restart' returns immediately after every reboot, a third-party watch face may be crashing the device.
Switch to the default Fitbit face from the Fitbit app: Today → Watch → Clocks → Fitbit Default.
    Sync the change.

  5. Update Fitbit firmware.

Fitbit app → Today → tap your device → check for firmware update.
    Apply pending updates.
    Restart the device after.
Bug fixes regularly address boot-loop issues.

  6. Factory reset as last resort.

Fitbit app → Today → tap device → Factory Reset.
Wipes everything including data not yet synced.
    Pair the Fitbit fresh after.
This recovers from severe software corruption.

  7. Contact Fitbit support if stuck.

If factory reset cannot recover the Fitbit, contact Fitbit support via the app.
Out-of-warranty replacements typically come with a 25-50% discount on a new device.
Within warranty (1 year), replacement is free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose data if I factory reset?

Anything not yet synced to the Fitbit app is lost.
Sync first if you can — even partially functional Fitbits often sync once before reset.
Account-level data (history, badges, friends) lives in the Fitbit cloud and is unaffected.
