Needs to be Updated

Pixel Watch Smart Watch

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Pixel Watch shows 'Needs to be updated' when a mandatory Wear OS update is available — usually because new features depend on it or a security fix is being rolled out.
The watch blocks key features (sync, app installs) until the update completes.
Place the watch on its charger, keep the phone close and on WiFi, and let it run.
Most required updates take 30-45 minutes including the install.

Affected Models

  • Google Pixel Watch (1st gen)
  • Google Pixel Watch 2
  • Google Pixel Watch 3

Common Causes

  • Mandatory Wear OS roll-out from Google
  • Security patch requiring all watches to update
  • New app features needing newer firmware
  • Recovery from a previously failed update
  • Account-wide update push by Google

How to Fix It

  1. Plan a 45-minute window.

    Mandatory updates are not quick.
The Bluetooth transfer to the watch is slow because Wear OS update images are large.
Pick a time when the watch can stay on its charger and the phone can be near.

  2. Place watch on charger.

Set the Pixel Watch on its puck.
    Confirm the charging icon appears.
The watch will not accept updates while running on battery.

  3. Connect phone to WiFi.

Updates download to the phone first via WiFi, then transfer to the watch over Bluetooth.
    Cellular alone is too slow.
Confirm a stable home WiFi before starting.

  4. Tap Update from the prompt.

On the watch or in the Pixel Watch app, tap Update Now.
    The download begins.
    Progress shows on both devices.

  5. Disable phone sleep.

Settings → Display → Sleep → longest available (revert later).
Sleeping the phone interrupts the update.
Plug phone into power if its battery is low.

  6. Stay within Bluetooth range.

Keep the phone within 6 feet of the watch throughout.
Walking around the house breaks the connection and triggers Update Failed.

  7. Wait for confirmation.

When the update completes, the app shows 'Update successful' and the watch displays the new Wear OS version.
The watch may briefly disconnect during the install — that is normal.
Do not remove from the charger until success message appears.
