0x8004de85
OneDrive Software
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
OneDrive 0x8004de85 means the account you tried to sign in with does not match the account already configured on this PC, or it does not have a OneDrive license assigned.
It is also called the 'account mismatch' error.
Sign in with the correct account, or have your admin assign the missing license.
Affected Models
- OneDrive for Business on Windows
- OneDrive for Business on macOS
- Domain-joined PCs with mixed personal and work accounts
Common Causes
- Trying to sign in with a personal Microsoft account when the PC is configured for a work account
- User has no OneDrive license assigned in the Microsoft 365 admin centre
- Account was moved between tenants — old tenant ID still cached
- The work account was deleted but its profile still exists locally
How to Fix It
-
Check which account you are typing.
OneDrive treats personal (outlook.com, hotmail.com, live.com) and work (your-company.com) accounts differently.
If your PC is set up for work and you are typing a personal email, sign-in fails with 0x8004de85.
Use the email your IT admin gave you, not your personal Microsoft account. -
Confirm the OneDrive license.
Visit office.com and sign in with the work account.
If you do not see OneDrive in the app launcher, your account has no OneDrive license.
Ask your admin to assign one — Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, E1, E3, and E5 all include OneDrive. -
Clear the cached account from Windows.
Open Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
Find the old or wrong account.
Click Disconnect.
Confirm the prompt.
Then reopen OneDrive and sign in with the correct account. -
Reset OneDrive.
Press Win+R and paste:
%localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset
Wait two minutes for OneDrive to relaunch.
If it doesn't relaunch, run onedrive.exe from the same folder.
This clears the cached tenant ID.
