Phone Number Not Registered
WhatsApp Software
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
WhatsApp 'Your phone number is no longer registered with WhatsApp on this phone' (also shown as 'Phone number is not registered') means someone — usually you — signed in to your WhatsApp account on another phone.
WhatsApp permits exactly one primary phone per account.
Logging in elsewhere kicks the previous phone off.
To get this phone back online, re-register it with the same number.
Affected Models
- WhatsApp on Android
- WhatsApp on iPhone
- WhatsApp Business
- Phones returning from extended airplane mode
Common Causes
- You signed in to WhatsApp on a new phone — the old one was kicked off
- Family member used your number to register WhatsApp on their phone
- SIM swap moved the number to a new device
- Someone gained access to your SMS verification code
- WhatsApp account was reset by support after a recovery request
How to Fix It
-
Decide which phone you want to keep using.
WhatsApp only allows one phone per account at a time.
Pick the device you want WhatsApp on.
The other will lose access automatically once you re-register on this one. -
Re-register on this phone.
Open WhatsApp.
Tap your phone number when prompted.
WhatsApp sends an SMS with a 6-digit verification code — enter it.
If SMS doesn't arrive within 60 seconds, tap 'Call me' for a voice call instead. -
Restore your chat history.
After re-registering, WhatsApp asks if you want to restore from backup.
Tap Restore.
The backup must exist on the same Google account (Android) or iCloud account (iPhone) — backups don't cross OSes.
If you switched OS, the chat history doesn't transfer through this method. -
If someone else stole your number, secure it first.
Call your mobile carrier and ask if a SIM swap happened recently.
If yes, secure the SIM with a port-out PIN.
Then re-register WhatsApp.
Without securing the SIM, the attacker just kicks you off again with another verification code. -
Enable two-step verification.
Once back in, open WhatsApp Settings → Account → Two-step verification → Enable.
Set a 6-digit PIN.
This blocks anyone (including someone with your SIM) from re-registering your number — they'd need the PIN too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the other person see my messages while I'm locked out?
If they actively registered on their phone, they see your contacts and any messages received after their registration.
Old chat history doesn't transfer unless they have your backup file too.
Re-register fast on your phone and turn on two-step verification — the other phone instantly loses access.
