AC Disconnect Open
Enphase Microinverter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
AC disconnect open means the AC breaker or disconnect switch that connects the microinverters to the grid has been opened (switched off). Locate the solar AC breaker in your switchboard and confirm it is in the ON position.
Affected Models
- Enphase IQ8 Series
- Enphase IQ7 Series
- Enphase IQ6 Series
- Enphase Envoy-S Metered
- Enphase IQ Gateway
Common Causes
- AC breaker in the switchboard turned off or tripped
- Solar AC isolator switch at the switchboard turned off
- Enphase IQ Combiner Box AC disconnect set to off
- RCD on the solar circuit tripped due to a transient fault
- Grid power outage — microinverters cannot operate without grid (anti-islanding)
How to Fix It
-
Locate and check the solar AC breaker.
Go to your main switchboard and look for the circuit breaker labelled Solar, PV, or Enphase. Confirm it is in the ON position. If it has tripped to the middle position, switch it fully off and then back to ON.
-
Check for a tripped RCD.
If your solar circuit is protected by an RCD (safety switch), check whether the RCD has tripped. Press the Test button to confirm it works, then press the Reset button to restore power.
-
Check the IQ Combiner or AC disconnect switch.
Some Enphase systems use an IQ Combiner Box with its own AC disconnect switch. Locate the combiner box (usually near the inverter array or meter) and ensure the disconnect lever is in the ON position.
-
Wait for production to resume after restoring the breaker.
After the AC breaker is restored, Enphase microinverters take 5–10 minutes to run through their startup and grid-synchronisation checks before beginning to produce power.
-
Monitor for repeated tripping.
If the breaker trips again within a day, one or more microinverters may have a fault that is causing the breaker to trip. Contact your Enphase installer to check the system.
When to Call a Professional
If the AC breaker trips repeatedly after being reset, there is likely a wiring fault or a failed microinverter causing an overcurrent. Contact a licensed solar electrician.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enphase shows AC disconnect open but all my breakers look fine — why?
If the breakers appear on, the issue may be with the Envoy not detecting the AC voltage correctly, or a loose connection at the metering point. Try power-cycling the Envoy. If the message persists, a technician should inspect the Envoy's current transformer (CT) clamps.
Grid went out for an hour and now Enphase shows AC disconnect open — is this normal?
Yes — during a grid outage, Enphase microinverters see no AC grid and report AC disconnect. After the grid restores, they need 5 minutes to resynchronise and begin producing. The message should clear on its own.
