Network Communication Failure

Enphase Solar Inverter

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A Network Communication Failure on an Enphase Envoy means the gateway has lost internet connectivity to the Enphase cloud. The microinverters continue to produce normally, but reporting to Enlighten stops. Reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet to restore reporting.

Affected Models

  • Enphase Envoy-S Metered
  • Enphase Envoy-S Standard
  • Enphase IQ Gateway
  • Enphase Combiner 4
  • Enphase Combiner 4C

Common Causes

  • Wi-Fi password changed at the home router
  • Router replaced or moved further from the Envoy
  • Wi-Fi network on a 5GHz-only channel (Envoy only supports 2.4GHz)
  • Ethernet cable damaged or unplugged
  • ISP outage or DNS issue blocking Enphase cloud access

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm production continues.

Open the Enlighten app — even with the network error, recent historical data should be visible. The microinverters store data locally and the Envoy uploads it later when connectivity returns. No production is lost.

  2. Check the Envoy LED status.

Walk to the Envoy and look at its LED indicators. The Network LED tells the story — solid green is good; off or red indicates network issue. Refer to the Envoy quick reference card for your specific model's LED meanings.

  3. Reconnect Wi-Fi via the Envoy.

Use the Installer Toolkit app on a phone (free download). Connect to the Envoy via Bluetooth or directly via the Envoy's setup network. Re-enter Wi-Fi credentials. The Envoy uploads buffered data within minutes.

  4. Check the Ethernet cable if used.

If your Envoy uses Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi, confirm the cable is firmly seated at both the Envoy and the router. Try a new cable if symptoms persist.

  5. Confirm 2.4GHz Wi-Fi is available.

Enphase Envoys only support 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. If your router runs 5GHz only, enable a 2.4GHz band (most modern routers support both simultaneously) and reconnect the Envoy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose production data while my Envoy is offline?

No — microinverters store ~30 days of data locally. The Envoy uploads everything to Enlighten when connectivity returns. Reporting may show a gap during the outage but historical data is preserved.

How can I prevent recurring Envoy network errors?

Use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi for stability. If Wi-Fi is necessary, place the router as close to the Envoy as practical, or add a Wi-Fi extender. Set the home router to retain the Envoy's IP address (DHCP reservation) to avoid re-pairing after router restarts.
