Rapid Shutdown Error

Enphase Microinverter

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Enphase rapid shutdown error means the system's rapid shutdown switch was triggered — either manually, by a power outage, or by a fault — and the microinverters have stopped producing as required by electrical safety codes. To restart, the rapid shutdown switch must be set back to the RUN position and the microinverters will automatically restart within minutes.

Affected Models

  • Enphase IQ8 Series with SunSpec rapid shutdown
  • Enphase IQ7+ with rapid shutdown switch
  • Systems with Tigo, SolarBOS, or Midnite Solar rapid shutdown devices

Common Causes

  • Rapid shutdown switch manually set to SHUTDOWN by firefighters or electricians during maintenance
  • Power outage triggered the shutdown and the switch was not reset
  • Rapid shutdown device lost communication with the transmitter on the roof
  • MLPE (Module Level Power Electronics) communication error between the rapid shutdown device and microinverters
  • Wiring fault in the rapid shutdown signal circuit

How to Fix It

  1. Locate and reset the rapid shutdown switch.

The rapid shutdown switch is typically a labelled red switch near the main electrical panel or at the base of the building. Set it to the RUN or ON position. On systems using the Enphase IQ System Controller, check its status in Enlighten.

  2. Restore grid power if there was an outage.

Rapid shutdown systems often trigger automatically during a grid outage. Confirm that mains power has been restored and is stable, then reset the shutdown switch. Microinverters will restart automatically within 5 minutes.

  3. Check all AC circuit breakers in the solar system.

Confirm that the solar AC disconnect, the main solar breaker in the distribution board, and any sub-panel breakers are all in the ON/closed position. A tripped breaker can prevent restart even after the rapid shutdown switch is reset.

  4. Check Enlighten for communication alerts on the rapid shutdown device.

If your system includes a dedicated rapid shutdown controller, check Enlighten for alerts on that device. A 'not communicating' alert on the rapid shutdown device means the signal between the roof and the ground unit has been interrupted.

When to Call a Professional

If the rapid shutdown switch is in the RUN position but microinverters are still shut down after 15 minutes, the rapid shutdown communication signal between the array and the switch may have failed. Contact your installer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do building codes require rapid shutdown?

Rapid shutdown reduces the voltage on solar panels and wiring on the roof within 30 seconds of activation. This protects firefighters from electrocution when working near a building fire. It is required by the NEC 2017 and later in the US and similar codes elsewhere.

Will a rapid shutdown event damage my Enphase microinverters?

No. Rapid shutdown is a designed-in safety function. Microinverters are built to shut down and restart repeatedly without any damage to the hardware.
