AC Overvoltage
SolarEdge Solar Inverter
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
An AC overvoltage condition on a SolarEdge inverter means the voltage on the electricity grid at your property is higher than the inverter's permitted operating range. SolarEdge disconnects from the grid when voltage is too high — this protects your appliances and the inverter. The inverter will reconnect automatically when grid voltage returns to normal.
Affected Models
- SolarEdge SE2200H
- SolarEdge SE3000H
- SolarEdge SE5000H
- SolarEdge SE7000H
- SolarEdge SE10000H
- SolarEdge StorEdge (all models)
- SolarEdge Three-Phase Inverters
Common Causes
- Grid voltage at your property is running high — often a utility supply issue affecting your street or area
- Export limiting — high solar export from many properties in your street raising local grid voltage
- Long cable run from the meter to the inverter — voltage rise on export
- Inverter AC cable undersized — voltage drop under load appearing as overvoltage to the inverter
- Grid voltage threshold in the inverter set too conservatively for your local grid conditions
How to Fix It
-
Check the mySolarEdge app or monitoring portal for how often the overvoltage disconnect is happening.
Occasional brief disconnects are normal. If the inverter is disconnecting for hours at a time daily, your grid voltage is chronically high and needs to be reported to your electricity network operator.
-
Check other appliances in your home for signs of high voltage.
Light bulbs burning out quickly, appliances running warm, or visible flickering can all indicate high grid voltage at your property.
-
Contact your electricity network operator (the company that owns the poles and wires) if the issue is frequent.
Persistent AC overvoltage is the network operator's responsibility to fix. They are legally required to supply power within the permitted voltage range. Log the times and duration of overvoltage events in the SolarEdge monitoring portal to provide as evidence.
-
Ask your solar installer whether the inverter's voltage threshold can be adjusted.
In some countries, installers can adjust the upper voltage disconnect threshold within permitted limits to reduce nuisance tripping on grids that run slightly high.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AC overvoltage damage my SolarEdge inverter?
The inverter disconnects before damage occurs — that is the purpose of the protection. However, chronically high grid voltage can degrade appliances and electronics in your home over time, and means you are losing solar production during disconnects. Report persistent overvoltage to your network operator.
Why does AC overvoltage happen more in the middle of the day?
At midday, all solar systems in your area are exporting maximum power. This collective export raises the local grid voltage. Networks that were not designed for high solar penetration can regularly push above the permitted voltage band on clear sunny days.
