No Atmos Detected
LG Soundbar
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
LG soundbars indicate Atmos through a small label or LED on the display.
If Atmos isn't detected, the source isn't sending Atmos: either the streaming app/disc isn't actually Atmos-encoded, the TV's eARC isn't passing the bitstream, or HDMI cable bandwidth is insufficient.
Check the source's audio info, enable eARC on the TV, and use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
Affected Models
- LG SP9YA
- LG S95QR
- LG SC9S
- LG SP11RA
- LG SN10YG
Common Causes
- Source is Dolby Digital Plus, not Atmos
- TV eARC not enabled or not connected through eARC port
- HDMI cable doesn't support eARC bandwidth
- TV passthrough set to PCM or compressed audio
- Soundbar input set to optical (Atmos can't pass over optical)
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the source has Atmos.
On Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+: open the title's audio menu.
The track must say 'Dolby Atmos' or 'English [Dolby Atmos]'.
Just 'Dolby 5.1' isn't Atmos.
Many releases default to lower-tier codecs even when Atmos is available. -
Use the TV's eARC HDMI port.
Only one HDMI port on the TV supports eARC — usually labelled 'HDMI eARC' or 'eARC/ARC'.
Connect the soundbar's HDMI OUT to that port.
Other HDMI ports won't carry the high-bitrate Atmos signal. -
Enable eARC on the TV.
TV settings → Sound → HDMI eARC mode → Auto or On.
Some LG TVs call it 'Digital Audio Output → Pass-through'.
Without eARC, the TV downsamples to plain Dolby Digital. -
Use an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
eARC needs higher bandwidth than ARC.
Cables sold as 'HDMI 2.1 certified' or 'Ultra High Speed' are required.
Some older HDMI cables fail to carry Atmos even though video looks fine. -
Set TV audio output mode.
Many LG TVs have a 'Digital Sound Out' option.
Set to 'Pass Through' or 'Dolby Atmos PCM/Auto' — not 'PCM only', which strips Atmos. -
Check soundbar input.
Atmos cannot travel over optical (toslink) — that protocol is too narrow.
Use HDMI eARC.
Switch the soundbar to the HDMI input.
Optical can carry Dolby Digital 5.1 but not Atmos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my YouTube Atmos demo not work but Netflix does?
YouTube doesn't support Atmos delivery.
Demo videos labelled 'Dolby Atmos' on YouTube are usually just ambient surround.
For real Atmos, use streaming services that explicitly support it: Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, Max, Prime Video.
