HDMI ARC Handshake Failed
Sonos Soundbar
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Sonos HDMI ARC handshake fails when the TV and soundbar can't agree on audio format negotiation over HDMI.
Causes: TV's CEC features disabled or named wrong, wrong HDMI port (must be the eARC/ARC port), incompatible HDMI cable, or TV firmware bugs.
Enable CEC on TV (often called 'Anynet+', 'Bravia Sync', 'Simplink'), use the included Sonos cable, and confirm you're plugged into the eARC port.
Affected Models
- Sonos Arc
- Sonos Beam Gen 2
- Sonos Beam Gen 1
- Sonos Playbar
Common Causes
- TV CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) disabled
- Wrong HDMI port — only one supports eARC/ARC
- Cable doesn't meet eARC bandwidth requirements
- TV brand-specific CEC feature renamed and not enabled
- TV firmware needs update
- HDMI handshake on cold boot timing-sensitive
How to Fix It
-
Confirm correct HDMI port.
Only one HDMI port on your TV supports eARC.
It's usually labeled 'HDMI eARC' or 'HDMI 2 (eARC)' or similar.
Check TV manual.
Connect Sonos to that specific port. -
Enable CEC on the TV.
TV settings → System → CEC (or HDMI Control / Anynet+ / Bravia Sync / Simplink — the name varies).
Set to On.
Without CEC, TV doesn't negotiate audio with the soundbar. -
Use Sonos's cable first.
Sonos ships with a cable rated for eARC.
Use that one for setup.
Generic HDMI cables sometimes lack the bandwidth for Atmos passthrough even though they pass video fine.
If you need a longer run, buy 'HDMI 2.1 certified' or 'Ultra High Speed'. -
Power-cycle in correct order.
Unplug TV power, unplug Sonos power.
Wait 60 seconds.
Plug Sonos in first, wait for boot light.
Plug TV in.
HDMI handshake happens at TV power-up — order matters. -
Update TV firmware.
Older TV firmware often has eARC handshake bugs that updates fixed.
Check TV manufacturer's update process — usually USB or network.
Apply latest, retry. -
Set TV audio output explicitly.
TV settings → Sound → Audio Output → set to External Speaker via HDMI ARC (not Bluetooth, not Optical, not Internal).
Some TVs default to internal even with ARC connected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't Optical work the same?
Optical (Toslink) is older and lower-bandwidth.
It can't carry Dolby Atmos, can't carry uncompressed multichannel.
HDMI ARC/eARC carries everything modern TV apps stream.
Use Optical only as a backup if HDMI fails entirely.
