Trueplay Failed

Sonos Soundbar

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Sonos Trueplay tuning fails when the iPhone microphone can't get clean audio measurements.
Background noise (TV, AC, fan, traffic), microphone obstruction (case over phone), or the phone's mic itself failing all break tuning.
Make the room as quiet as possible, remove the phone case, and walk slowly while the test tone plays.
Trueplay also requires iPhone or iPad — Android phones don't have the certified microphones Sonos needs.

Affected Models

  • Sonos Arc
  • Sonos Beam Gen 2
  • Sonos Beam Gen 1
  • Sonos Ray
  • Sonos Playbar

Common Causes

  • Background noise during tuning (open windows, AC, TV in another room)
  • iPhone case blocking the microphone
  • Phone microphone damaged or covered with debris
  • Walking too fast or staying still during tuning
  • Trueplay attempted on Android (not supported)
  • Sonos firmware out of date

How to Fix It

  1. Make the room silent.

    Close all windows.
Turn off AC, fans, washing machine, dishwasher.
Pause music or TV in adjacent rooms.
Trueplay measures very quiet audio reflections — any noise floors out the test.

  2. Remove phone case.

Cases that cover the bottom of the iPhone block the microphone.
Even thin cases reduce mic sensitivity.
Remove case for the duration of the Trueplay test, then put back.

  3. Confirm you're using iOS.

Trueplay only works on iPhone and iPad.
Android phones have too much variation in microphone quality and aren't certified.
Borrow an iPhone if you don't own one — the calibration is one-time per room.

  4. Walk slowly during the test.

App tells you to walk around the room while the test tone plays.
Move slowly and continuously — about the speed of a casual walk.
Cover seating area, stand in normal listening positions.
    Don't rush; don't stand still.

  5. Restart and retry.

If tuning fails repeatedly, force-quit Sonos app, restart phone, retry.
Apps that hang on tuning are common after big iOS updates.
    Fresh boot clears it.

  6. Update Sonos firmware.

App → Settings → System → System Updates.
Older firmware had Trueplay bugs that current versions fixed.
    Apply latest stable, then retry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Trueplay worth doing?

For most rooms, yes — it adapts the soundbar to your room acoustics.
Hard floors, glass walls, asymmetric placement all benefit.
The difference is subtle on small soundbars (Ray, Beam) but significant on Arc with full Atmos.
Once tuned, doesn't need repeating unless room changes substantially.
