Wireless Subwoofer Not Pairing

Sony Soundbar

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Sony wireless subwoofers pair via proprietary 5.8GHz link (avoids Wi-Fi interference).
If pairing fails, the subwoofer is too far away (over 30 feet), 5GHz Wi-Fi router is interfering, or the LINK button hasn't been held long enough.
Place sub within 15-20 feet of soundbar, hold LINK button on sub for 5+ seconds, hold LINK on soundbar for 5+ seconds.
LED on sub goes solid green when paired.

Affected Models

  • Sony HT-A7000
  • Sony HT-A5000
  • Sony HT-X8500
  • Sony HT-G700
  • Sony HT-S350

Common Causes

  • Sub too far from soundbar (over 30 feet, walls between)
  • 5GHz Wi-Fi router on same channel as 5.8GHz sub link
  • LINK button not held long enough on either device
  • Sub power cord not fully seated (intermittent power)
  • Pairing record corrupted after firmware update
  • Hardware failure in either device

How to Fix It

  1. Position sub close to soundbar.

For pairing: place sub within 5-10 feet of soundbar.
After successful pair, sub can be relocated within 30-40 feet (line of sight).
Walls and floors reduce reliable range.

  2. Confirm sub has power.

    Plug sub into wall outlet.
Power LED on back should glow.
If LED is dark, power cord loose — push firmly.
Try a different outlet to rule out outlet issue.

  3. Hold LINK button on sub.

Sony subs have a LINK button on the back panel.
    Hold for 5+ seconds.
Sub LED begins flashing — that's pairing mode.
Don't release until flashing is steady.

  4. Hold LINK on soundbar.

Sony soundbar's LINK button (often on top or back).
    Hold for 5+ seconds.
    Soundbar's link indicator flashes.
Both devices flash for 30 seconds while pairing.

  5. Wait for solid green LED.

When pairing succeeds, sub's LINK LED becomes solid green.
    Soundbar shows 'Sub' indicator.
Test with bass-heavy content to confirm output.
If LED stays flashing, re-pair attempt failed.

  6. Move 5GHz Wi-Fi away.

Sony 5.8GHz sub link sits adjacent to 5GHz Wi-Fi.
If your router uses channels 149-165, interference is possible.
Set router 5GHz to channel 36-48 (lower band) to reduce interference.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pair a Sony sub to a different brand soundbar?

No — Sony's wireless protocol is proprietary.
Sub only pairs with matching Sony soundbar or AV receiver from the same product family.
Buying a generic wireless sub kit lets you use the sub with any soundbar but adds latency.
