E02

Anova Sous Vide Cooker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E02 means the Anova's internal temperature sensor detected water heated past the safety maximum (typically 99°C / 210°F).
The unit shuts down to prevent damage.
Power off, let the water cool below 90°C, then restart.
Most causes: temperature sensor failed reading low (heater overshoots), or the unit was set to a temp above its rated range.

Affected Models

  • Anova Precision Cooker
  • Anova Precision Cooker Pro
  • Anova Nano
  • Anova Precision Cooker 2.0

Common Causes

  • Temperature sensor failed reading low (heater overshoots)
  • Set point above the safe maximum
  • Heater relay stuck closed
  • Mineral buildup on the sensor (false low reading)
  • Ambient room very hot (rare but possible)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off the unit.

    Press the power button.
    Unplug from the outlet.
This stops any further heating attempts.
Wait at least 30 minutes for water to cool below 90°C (194°F).

  2. Check your set point.

After unplugging and powering back on, check the set temperature.
Anova circulators are rated up to 92°C (197°F) typically.
If you accidentally set higher, that's likely your E02.
Reset to a normal sous vide temperature (130-185°F / 54-85°C).

  3. Inspect for mineral buildup.

Pull the Anova out of the water (with power off).
Look at the heating element area at the bottom.
Heavy white scale insulates the temperature sensor and causes overshoot.
Descale by running 50/50 white vinegar and water at 60°C for 30 minutes.

  4. Test with fresh cool water.

Use fresh cool water in a clean container.
Set to 60°C (140°F) and let the Anova heat.
Watch for normal smooth temperature climb.
If it overshoots dramatically (jumps past 65°C when set to 60°C), the sensor is failing.
    Contact Anova support.

  5. Contact Anova support if E02 returns.

Persistent E02 with normal set points and clean unit means hardware fault.
    Contact Anova support at support.anovaculinary.com.
    Under warranty: replacement is typical.
Out of warranty: 100-200 USD repair, but most users replace at this price (newer Anova models are 200 USD).

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my food be ruined?

Probably yes if E02 lasted more than 30 minutes.
Sous vide depends on precise temperature.
Water that briefly went to 99°C will have heavily over-cooked the food.
For a brief 5-minute overshoot during recovery, food may still be salvageable for some recipes.
Use a separate thermometer to verify food internal temp.

Why does E02 happen?

The sensor and heating element work together. If the sensor reports inaccurate low readings, the controller keeps heating, expecting the water to be cool.
Once it gets hot enough, the safety high-limit cuts off (E02).
Mineral buildup is the most common cause.
Annual descaling prevents this.
