E03
Anova Sous Vide Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E03 means the temperature sensor is reading data the controller can't trust — either it's broken, shorted, or reading impossibly high or low.
The unit refuses to heat without a working sensor.
Check for mineral buildup on the bottom of the Anova (descale if heavy).
If E03 persists after descaling, contact Anova support — sensor repair isn't user-fixable.
Affected Models
- Anova Precision Cooker
- Anova Precision Cooker Pro
- Anova Nano
- Anova Precision Cooker 2.0
Common Causes
- Temperature sensor failed (open or shorted)
- Heavy mineral buildup insulating the sensor
- Sensor wire broken inside the unit
- Controller sensor input damaged
- Recent power surge damaged sensor circuit
How to Fix It
-
Power off and remove from water.
Press the power button.
Unplug from the outlet.
Carefully lift the Anova out of the water bath.
Be gentle — heating element area can be hot.
Set on a towel to drip dry. -
Inspect the heating element area.
Look at the bottom of the Anova where the heating element is.
Heavy white scale (calcium deposits from hard water) insulates the temperature sensor.
If you see thick deposits, that's your likely E03 cause.
Light scale doesn't typically cause issues. -
Descale the Anova.
Fill a container with 50/50 white vinegar and water.
Set the Anova to 60°C (140°F) and run for 30 minutes.
The vinegar dissolves mineral deposits.
Rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterward.
Repeat if heavily scaled. -
Test with fresh water.
After descaling, fill a fresh container with cool water.
Power on.
Set to 60°C and start.
Watch the temperature display.
If it climbs smoothly to 60°C and stops, the sensor is working again.
If E03 returns, the sensor is genuinely failed. -

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I descale?
Every 2-3 months for typical use in hard water areas.
Annually in soft water areas.
If you can see white scale building up on the heater area, descale.
Regular descaling extends the life of your Anova significantly.
Can I use my Anova while waiting for replacement?
No — without a working temperature sensor, sous vide cooking isn't safe.
Food may be undercooked or overcooked.
Use a stovetop pot with a separate thermometer as a workaround, or use a different cooking method until the Anova is replaced or repaired.
