E04

Anova Sous Vide Cooker

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E04 means the water circulation pump isn't moving water properly.
Most often the impeller is jammed by debris (food particles, mineral fragments) or the pump motor has failed.
Power off, remove the Anova from water, unscrew the bottom cover, and inspect the impeller for blockage.
If clear, the motor itself has failed — usually means replacement.

Affected Models

  • Anova Precision Cooker
  • Anova Precision Cooker Pro
  • Anova Nano
  • Anova Precision Cooker 2.0

Common Causes

  • Impeller jammed by food debris or mineral fragments
  • Pump motor failed (after years of use)
  • Impeller bent or broken
  • Mineral buildup on impeller shaft
  • Water level too low for proper pump operation

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and unplug.

    Press power off.
    Unplug from the outlet.
Lift the Anova out of the water carefully.
Hold over a sink to drain residual water from inside.

  2. Unscrew the bottom cover.

Most Anova circulators have a bottom cover that unscrews (turn counterclockwise).
This exposes the impeller and pump area.
Check your model's manual for specific procedure.
Newer Anova Precision Cooker 2.0 has tool-free bottom removal.

  3. Inspect the impeller.

Look at the impeller — should be clean and undamaged.
Try spinning it with your finger — should rotate freely with light resistance.
Look for debris wrapped around the shaft or stuck between blades.
Pick out any debris with tweezers.

  4. Clean and reassemble.

Wipe the impeller and surrounding area with a soft cloth.
Don't soak the motor in water.
Reattach the bottom cover, ensuring it's fully seated and screwed on (or clipped, depending on model).
    Test in fresh water.

  5. Contact Anova support if E04 persists.

If impeller is clean and free-spinning but E04 still appears, the pump motor has failed.
Contact Anova support — under warranty replacement is typical.
Out of warranty: pump motor isn't typically a separately serviceable part on consumer Anova models, so replacement of the whole unit is common.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of debris jams the pump?

Most common: food particles that escaped from a leaking sous vide bag.
Less common: mineral fragments that broke off the heating element from descaling.
Use sturdy bags and double-check seals.
Run the Anova in clean water (without bags) periodically to flush out any accumulated debris.

Can low water cause E04?

Yes — if water level drops below the pump intake, the pump pulls air, which the controller interprets as pump failure.
This may show as E04 on some Anova models or E01 (water level low) on others.
Either way, top up water and continue.
